Democrats to offer payroll tax cut compromise

Washington (CNN) -- Democrats on Monday will propose a compromise plan to extend the payroll tax cut that includes a "serious" way to pay the more than $200 billion price tag, the chairman of the Senate Budget Committee says.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, will introduce the compromise proposal Monday after the chamber last week voted down competing Democratic and Republican plans, Sen. Kent Conrad told "Fox News Sunday."

The North Dakota Democrat refused to divulge details, saying it was up to Reid to do so, but added it would be "paid for in a way that's credible and serious."

"It will be able to represent a compromise from what was voted on last week," Conrad said, calling it a "serious attempt to move this ball forward."

The biggest tip off is the unprecedent provision in both commissions that Congress could only vot "yea" or "nay" on their reccommendations, no negotiations or amendments. (I guess the DLC feels it is easier to control one appoiniter of Presidential Commissions than to control all Democrats in Congress.)

We're probabaly going to have to give up even more for a one-year unemployment extension that a sizable number of the unemployed won't even benefit from, anyway. The last time, it was a two-year extension of the Bush tax cuts for the rich.

Between Conrad, Ben Nelson and Joe Lieberman I think the next Democratic Senate Caucus will be stronger, even if we lose two of those seats. Improvement by subtraction.

We need to kneel out the clock by killing the Payroll Tax Cut altogether. If the GOP doesn't want to capitulate, taxes are going up...a matter of fact. We can do nothing and win.

Time to reverse that by lowering the FICA rates for middle class and poor

and substantially LIFTING the cap on FICA earnings -- I'd say to a minimum

of $250,000 but should probably be even higher.
