Democrats to offer payroll tax cut compromise
By Tom Cohen, CNN
updated 2:21 PM EST, Sun December 4, 2011

Washington (CNN) -- Democrats on Monday will propose a compromise plan to extend the payroll tax cut that includes a "serious" way to pay the more than $200 billion price tag, the chairman of the Senate Budget Committee says.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, will introduce the compromise proposal Monday after the chamber last week voted down competing Democratic and Republican plans, Sen. Kent Conrad told "Fox News Sunday."

The North Dakota Democrat refused to divulge details, saying it was up to Reid to do so, but added it would be "paid for in a way that's credible and serious."

"It will be able to represent a compromise from what was voted on last week," Conrad said, calling it a "serious attempt to move this ball forward."

why they need to compromise when the republicans are already running scared on this.

Fuck no. And that argument will not be made, nor will the stunning hypocrisy on display here be brought up. I dread what is in this 'compromise'.

31. Who compromised?
Obama has been talking about cutting what he refers to as "entitlements" since before his inauguration. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/15/AR2009011504114.html

Both the failed Cat Food Commission and the Super Committee were inspired by the Sunset Commission proposed by the DLC. http://www.dlc.org/ndol_ci.cfm?contentid=254871&kaid=85&subid=65

The biggest tip off is the unprecedent provision in both commissions that Congress could only vot "yea" or "nay" on their reccommendations, no negotiations or amendments. (I guess the DLC feels it is easier to control one appoiniter of Presidential Commissions than to control all Democrats in Congress.)

And, according to John Conyers, it was Obama, not Boehner, not Cantor, not Ryan and not any Republican, who put cuts to Medicare and Social Security on the table during debt ceiling kabuki. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/07/29/1000282/-Conyers-spills-the-beans-on-Obama-call-for-WH-protests

And let's not forget, it was very loyal Democrat President William Clinton who got caught by a mike offering to help Ryan get cuts by Democrats in the House and Senate. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2011/05/bill-clinton-to-paul-ryan-on-medicare-election-give-me-a-call/

Oh, and by the way, did you not which members of the Democratic Caucuses did and did not get on that Super Committee?

So, whose compromise was the Super Committee?

14. I've wondered what our side will have to give up
in order to give out a tax cut. Tom Sawyer and a fence!

We're probabaly going to have to give up even more for a one-year unemployment extension that a sizable number of the unemployed won't even benefit from, anyway. The last time, it was a two-year extension of the Bush tax cuts for the rich.

from general revenue. It does not reduce SS funding. I haven't seen the new proposals but I suspect that they are the same.

running scared on this thing right now. All polls show favor towards extending the cuts just as all polls show not extending the tax cuts for the rich. Yet, dems get weak in the knees on everything.

26. If it involves Kent Conrad, it's got to be bad.
I'm going to get in trouble for this because he's still a Democrat, but some Democrats like Kent Conrad deserve our opposition and enmity because they're Bad Democrats.

Between Conrad, Ben Nelson and Joe Lieberman I think the next Democratic Senate Caucus will be stronger, even if we lose two of those seats. Improvement by subtraction.

Good riddance to trash.

27. We don't need to move the ball forward.
We need to kneel out the clock by killing the Payroll Tax Cut altogether. If the GOP doesn't want to capitulate, taxes are going up...a matter of fact. We can do nothing and win.

Why does this administration not understand the concept of winning by doing nothing?

34. Burden of paying FICA was put on shoulders of middle class and poor decades ago -- !!!
Time to reverse that by lowering the FICA rates for middle class and poor

and substantially LIFTING the cap on FICA earnings -- I'd say to a minimum

of $250,000 but should probably be even higher.

worried about how bad the beating is going to be this time.

Tht fracking "c" word again. I've come to despise it over the past 3 years, almost as much as I detest the word "bipartisanship".

As long as the status quo is maintained, the beatings and hypocrisy will continue until morale improves.
