New (centre-left) party heads for surprise win in Slovenia

A new centre-left party headed by Ljubljana's popular and charismatic millionaire mayor won a surprise victory in Slovenia's elections Sunday, exit polls and partial official results suggested.

Zoran Jankovic's Positive Slovenia won 29.1 per cent of the vote, exit polls published by state television showed, versus 26.5 per cent for the centre-right Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) of ex-premier Janez Jansa.

The results with some 40 per cent of the ballots counted, show the conservatives - who were favorites to win - trailing with 25.8 per cent.

The result marks a huge upset after weeks of opinion polls predicting a comfortable victory for the centre-right party of the European Union country's former prime minister Janez Jansa over the ruling Social Democrats.

that's it's still a center-right country. That's what our media did to us as soon as Obama won.

Come to think of it, why is it so damn important to report this as "center-left"? Did the "center-right" ever win an election? Not that I've heard of. Most news media these days really sucks.

And 'centre-right' is how the current French and German governments are typically described:

These are centre-right, as opposed to far right parties that are nationalist, and borderline racist or fascist. An example of them is Fidesz in Hungary:

A new legal regulation has come into force in Hungary making homelessness punishable by a fine of around $600 (�384) or prison.

MPs from the ruling conservative party proposed the regulation, on the grounds that Budapest could not cope with the large number of people on the streets.

Critics, including charities for the homeless, say it is unenforceable and that hostels lack sufficient places.
