Gun Owners Take On Newt Gingrich

Gingrich in the 1980s. Robin Nelson/ZumaPress

Now that's he's the front-runner in the race for the GOP presidential nomination, Newt Gingrich's 33-year-record is officially open for scrutiny. There are plenty of reasons why conservatives might reject the former Speaker of the House, but here's another one: guns. Georgia Gun Owners, a grassroots gun rights group from his home state, is now blasting Gingrich for "his more than two-decade history of supporting gun control." The group has asked its 6,000 members to call Gingrich's new Iowa headquarters and make their complaints known.

Per the release the group blasted out this morning:

While Newt used the institutional gun lobby as a mouthpiece to convince millions of gun owners nationwide that "as long as he is Speaker, no gun-control legislation is going to move in committee or on the House floor," he was working behind the scenes to pass gun control.

1. Republicans are in favor of plenty of gun control.
So long as it's for "undesirable" types like brown people and the poor. That's how California got the Mulford Act, it's how New York got the Sullivan Act, and it's how "may issue" firearms permits became so popular, because white sheriffs could decide who was acceptable enough to have a gun.

3. Sadly true.
Still, the NRA comes down on the right side of this issue more often than not.

Gingrich has a track record of more shennanigans than Obama has (basically none) put into law, so you can expect about 4 million gun owners to get lots of info on why Gingrich sucks.

10. I think he is serious. You guys think it is OK to walk around with guns that are deadly as grenades.
Edited on Mon Dec-05-11 03:02 PM by Hoyt

With that said, Newt is a vile right winger. Thus, the gun toting majority in the TParty and regular Republican militia will let him get by with this as long as he doesn't start talking about introducing legislation.

11. Grenades aren't even firearms.
They are indiscriminate ordnance, classified as dangerous devices, not firearms.

Grenade LAUNCHERS are empty metal tubes.

As for Newt, curious to see what the NRA recommends. Members are quite well aware of his history.

No. No it is not. Nor are there such things as exploding pistol bullets, or exploding bullets at all.

15. I'm betting NRA and other right wing organizations will support him because he is vile, callous, and

bigoted. That counts for a lot in right wing circles. And since the majority of gun owners -- particularly toters -- are right wing . . . . . . .

17. Not really, there are many of us
that own and carry that are liberal. However, there are those that are so crazy about their guns that they will follow anyone that promises "gun rights" only to screw them out of everything else.

21. The majority are still right wingers.

As I've said before -- with a few exceptions here, mostly those who post about being a hero or are particularly vocal/callous in their hatred for poor folks who typically commit crimes -- I don't worry too much about liberal carriers (because the number is relatively small). But, to make them happy, we have to allow particularly vile right wingers carry. So, it's not a good situation for the 96%ers who don't carry.

22. I think the latest polls show that
about half of Americans think the current laws are OK. I'm fine the CCW laws of most states, other than the enforcement and lack of background checks. My friends that carry are liberals, not in the NRA and, I would say, of good moral character. Then there are those cocky loud mouths that cheer any loss of human life if the gun owner is not charged. They only post in the gun sections of liberal sites and send money to right wing orgs. like the NRA. They are not the majority, only the loudest group. We can do more to bring sanity to the gun laws by not lumping everyone to the extremes of either side.

26. I'll bet the guns you carry in public are as deadly as a grenade.

Maybe you've identified our problem with respect to guns -- they need to be classified as a "dangerous device" and not considered a fashion accessory like many here want.

16. NRA will always support neo-cons if
white and republican. Newt runs his mouth while voting the other way and has a 20 year record of A or A+ rating from the NRA, while the half Irish president has signed pro gun laws and still gets an F. Until sane members of the NRA start retuning their membership cards and stop sending money they'll keep it up with Board of Directors member Grover Norquist using them to pass right wing economic policy..

23. A couple of points..........
First off, its the Georgia Gun Owners that are opposing Gingrich, not the NRA.

Second, it would be kinda strange if the NRA did not support him because:

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich gave a National Rifle Association audience in Charlotte a ringing defense of the Second Amendment on Saturday night and urged his listeners to go to the polls in November.

snip

He also drew loud applause when he talked about the right to bear arms: "It's not in defense of hunting, it's not in defense of target shooting or collecting. The Second Amendment is defense of freedom from the state."

25. A couple of points for you
The NRA's lobbying arm, the NRA Institute for Legislative Action, lists several such "facts" about Obama, including the 10 claims listed on the flier. The NRA-ILA brushes aside Obama's stated position. "Don't Believe Obama," it says. "Don’t listen to his campaign rhetoric! Look instead to what he has said and done during his entire political career."
Very well. Let's do that. What we find is that the NRA is often offering its own spin as Obama's "plan."

http://factcheck.org/2008/09/nra-targets-obama/

"Don’t listen to his campaign rhetoric! Look instead to what he has said and done during his entire political career."

That doesn't applies to Republican presidential cabdudates or Ohio governor candidates. The NRA is a right wing org that supports Grover Norquist attempt to destroy government..

35. Welcome to DU
Grover Norquist is on the Board of Directors of the NRA along with Ted Nugent. Their agendas go way beyond gun rights. They are the ones that assign grades to candidates. By giving an A+ to Newt, who voted for AWB along with changing John Kasich's F to a B- just before and election are evidence of what I speak of.
