Two die as suicide attacks on Iraq's southern oil terminals are foiled

BASRA, Iraq (AFP) - Two US servicemen were killed as they helped to foil a series of suicide boat bomb attacks on Iraq (news - web sites)'s southern oil terminals, officials and the US Navy said.

The two men were part of an eight-strong boarding party thrown into the sea when a boat they were about to board exploded as it neared an exclusion zone surrounding the key oil facility at Khor Al-Amaya.

Another two boats headed towards four oil tankers waiting to load at the main Basra terminal nearby but were stopped when security teams opened fire, according to officials.

One exploded just seven metres from a tanker in the Saturday afternoon attacks, according to port official Hamed al-Assadi, causing a power cut, and stopping crude oil loading. There were no casualties in that attack.

2. I really doubt that the Navy foiled anything. They're not equipped
with modern weapons which can take on AK47's. I know, I was in the navy.

4. Somehow I can't feel happy that 2 US servicemen gave their lives...
...to save ExxonMobil's oil. Talk about having an unfair oil subsidy! I wish our brave men and women didn't have to forfeit their lives for such an unworthy cause. Why can't ExxonMobil pay mercenaries to protect their damn tankers instead of using our troops for free?
