Republican Purity Pledge Rejected By South Carolina GOP
Source: WYYF TV (Greenville, SC)

LAURENS CO., S.C. -- The South Carolina Republican Party is rejecting a proposal by the Laurens County GOP to require candidates to sign a pledge on conservative values.

The pledge would require candidates to promise they have not had premarital sex, will be faithful to their spouses and will not watch pornography.

The pledge endorsed by Laurens County Republicans last month also requires candidates to protect gun rights, oppose abortion under any circumstances, endorse balanced budgets and oppose same-sex marriage.

State Republican Party executive director Matt Moore says it would be illegal for the Laurens County party to deny ballot access to candidates who refuse to sign the pledge.

More from the Miami Herald:

.....

The 28-point pledge also requires candidates to:

• Oppose abortion, in any circumstances

• Endorse the ideas of balanced state and federal budgets

• Hold a high regard for U.S. sovereignty and be committed to peace through “strength in foreign policy”

• Not favor any government action to allow civil unions by same-sex couples

“The purpose of the resolution was to try to ensure that candidates who wish to file to run on the ticket simply support the party’s platform,” said Bobby Smith, chairman of the Laurens County Republican Party, adding the county party also hopes to interview potential candidates. “Our party has had much success over the past few years, and we want to make sure they uphold the party’s principles if running on the party’s ticket.”

.....

“It’s absolutely absurd,” said Phil Bailey, director of the state Senate Democratic Caucus. “While the rest of the country is living in the 21st century, South Carolina Republicans are stuck in a social time machine.”

What is there left to say, really, about the future of the GOP?

1. Neo theos, repeat after me, please:
Some things should be only between me and my family, friends, neighbors and/or my worship community.

Some things should be only between me and my spouse and children.

Some things should be only between me and my God.

Some things should be only between me and my doctor.

Some things should be only between me and authors, cable companies, broadcasters, etc.

Government--and you--should stay out of all those things.

Keep repeating until it sinks in.
