Saddam "lawyer" would call Rumsfeld

Monday 26 April 2004, 10:20 Makka Time, 7:20 GMT

Controversial French lawyer Jacques Verges says he would call US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and former secretary of state Henry Kissinger as witnesses if he succeeds in defending ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein in an eventual trial.

But the 79-year-old lawyer also said on Sunday that he feared the United States might try to kill Saddam prior to trial. "I have this fear. I am not sure. If I express my fear, it's precisely to avoid this."

/snip/

"This mass destructive weapons were sold to Iraqi government by the United States. And Mr Rumsfeld has been one of the men responsible for this sale, for this bargain, for this market," Verges told CBS.

1. My guess is, it won't be as character witnesses. . .
since neither Rumsfeld nor Kissinger have any moral character whatsoever.

14. If you apply the analogy of a bartender serving an inebriated patron
who kills someone while drunk driving, in this case---

If you remember it was BushI, Rumy and Cheney that supplied the weapons to Saddam. Then compound it with the RICO ACT, it just keeps getting worse and worse the deeper you go.

3. Thanks Wonk, - I HAD missed that, got it saved now
.
.
.

also saved the transcript

and read it while listening to the audio.

Hope the BFEE doesn't arrange a heart attack for this guy.

He sure is going to reawaken a few distasteful issues.

From the transcript:

Did you see a problem in defending a man who has been accused by many of his own people of killing up to 300,000 people?

“ That is a number which surprise me. Well, I know that 500,000 children died in Iraq because of the embargo,” says Verges. "

Now THAT's definitely putting the accuser on the defensive -

4. The Saddam's trial should be a great moment with Verges.
I don't like him because he likes himself and media more than Justice. But I ought to say he is billiant lawyer.

Now, in a democracy, anybody is able to get a lawyer and there is no shame to be this one.

Edited on Mon Apr-26-04 07:18 AM by RUMMYisFROSTED
...is that those dimes will have Reagan's face on them. I guess the Freepers will get their wish after all.

11. I have zero faith
that this "trial" will be legitimate. It will be kangaroo court, and I would be very very very VERY surprised that rusmfeld or kissinger would show up if they were called. Executive privilage or something will stop them. Or Hussein will tragically die prior to the tribunal.

12. Good luck, M. Verges.
Rumsfeld and Kissinger are above the laws of their own country. You think they'll take a subpoena from you?
