BBC: US builds new Afghan airbase
US builds new Afghan airbase

excerpts:

The US military is building a new airbase in south-eastern Afghanistan, in a remote desert area near the border with Pakistan.

The move is aimed at improving security in the region.

In less than four days' time, the troops of the 27th Combat Engineering Battalion aim to have created an airstrip capable of taking C-130 transport aircraft.

1. Prep for the October surprise, though could've been Oct 2002 !@#$%!
Good to see that we might get back on the hunt for OBL now, 2 1/3 years after we'd overthrown the Taliban and effectively left Afghanistan to fend for itself, in favor of *'s quest for Iraqi oil.

This base will likely play a big part in this summer's hunt for OBL, in order to deliver him "dead or alive" before the election.

And don't ya wonder if this base could have been built sooner, had those $700 million not been secretly (and illegally) diverted to Iraq war preparations?

2. In a related story...
AFGHANISTAN - The Taliban have announce the opening of a new practice mortar range in south-eastern Afghanistan, in a remote desert area near the border with Pakistan. Militia forces under the command of Afghan warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar are also expected to use the new mortar range under a cooperative training arrangement.

6. Got a link for this article reference?

I *totally* missed the "Taliban" ref on the first pass; though something didn't seem right, I couldn't put my finger on it.
