Disputes Fester Over Overtime Rules

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Labor Secretary Elaine Chao and congressional Republicans on Wednesday accused opponents of new overtime regulations of waging a campaign of misinformation, insisting the Bush administration rules will benefit millions.
"That's your story and you're sticking with it," Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., shot back sarcastically at a House hearing, responding to remarks by Tammy McCutchen, a senior Labor Department official seated next to Chao at the committee witness table.
Chao unveiled the regulations last week, describing them as a long overdue modernization of overtime rules that were issued in 1949. Democrats and organized labor have vowed an election-year effort to block them, arguing they would scale back protections long enjoyed by millions of working men and women.

Chao said the new regulations would mean guaranteed overtime protection for 1.3 million salaried workers who earn $455 a week or less. "They are predominantly married women with less than a college degree and live in the South," she added.
