Missouri Voters Favor None Of the Above
Neither Bush Nor Kerry Impresses Focus Groups
By Dan Balz and Richard Morin

ST. LOUIS -- In the opening stages of the presidential campaign in this habitual battleground state, the news for President Bush is far from encouraging. For his Democratic challenger, John F. Kerry, it's even worse.

The escalating death toll in Iraq has elevated concerns about the U.S. commitment there, with voters unsettled by their fear that Bush has no plan for success and frustrated by their conviction that there may be no alternative but to stay the course.

At home, a sense of anxiety remains over the strength of the economic recovery, the loss of manufacturing jobs and the export of American jobs to overseas. "I was not scared five years ago," said Judy Bierman, 50, a homemaker who learned recently that a 50-year-old friend was about to be laid off. "Now it's scary; it's scary all the time."

The apprehensions over war and the economy represent clear obstacles in the president's path to reelection and an opening for Kerry. But the Massachusetts senator has problems of his own. At this point, he is barely part of the political conversation, particularly among the relatively small percentage of voters who have not picked sides.

2. Let's give Gore another go at it -- I'm sure he's ready to
"let it rip" this time. He has everything going for him -- executive experience, Vietnam war experience, conviction and courage -- and it would be moral justice for him to beat Bushit again!!! He could pick as his running mate someone like Clark to give him more military gravitas or Dr. Dean, to be on hand to give him a spine transplant in case he should lose his voice and falter!

3. Gore for VP?
Gore speaks like a human being now.

If he had done so before he would have won.

5. Please pay attention.
MISSOURI is unhappy with Bush.

MISSOURI is unhappy with Bush.

MISSOURI is unhappy with Bush.

Bush is the devil they know and they don't like him.

Throw the bastards out. That's what we do when everything fails.

Bush is the bastard who's in.

CONNECT A FLOCKING DOT.

PS: Are you saying Americans only vote for New Englanders with the initials JFK?

6. Actually, Gore DID win
Edited on Sun May-02-04 05:10 AM by Art_from_Ark
He got more popular votes than bu$h, and would have won Florida if Cheney hadn't asked his buddy on the not-so-supreme court to intervene to stop the vote-counting.

12. Gore won more Democratic votes than anybody in history
He won the election by more tha a half million votes. He lost to a Court of Republican Thugs not because of his speech habits.

7. Something to consdier
Despite going for Bush in 2000, Missouri voters threw Right-Wing-Nut John Ashcroft out of office in favor of a dead man.

Bush, in many ways, including but not limited to, appoint Ashcroft as AG, confusing the voices in his head with God, generally being a Pharisee, is goingto turn a lot of voters against him (not including the SW of the state)

Couple that with the concealed weapons law that the GOP forced on MO despite a veto, a question of its constitutionality in the state, anda majority of voters opposing it, the state is more in play than it was in 2000.

11. the devil you don't know
yep, Missouri voted for shrub but voted OUT Ashcroft (for al the good it did us)

Which gives Kerry some hope... Missourians will vote for the devil they don't know over the one they do.

I think it's also relevant that a state that is primarily conservative (Missouri is pretty much Bible belt with just St. Louis and KC to balence that out) is so against Shrub, the conservative messiah..according to the pundits.

Who knows, Kerry's pick for VP may swing things...

9. Bush's negative ads are working against Kerry?
Edited on Sun May-02-04 05:24 AM by Democat
The only thing most of these people know about Kerry is what they've heard from the right wing media and from Bush's lying TV ads.

Kerry is allowing Bush to define him - hopefully he will launch his own offensive soon and hopefully it won't be too late for some of these people who are being brainwashed by the right wingers.

10. Missouri voter here....
I am FIRMLY committed to ABB: will hold my nose and once again vote for the lesser evil.

In so many ways a Kerry administration would be an improvement over the secret government of George the lesser and Cheneyco.

Working people might fare better under a Kerry administration. I don't *think* Kerry would push through draconian measures to eliminate overtime for hard working, tax paying Americans.

If Kerry gets in, I will be one of those holding his feet to the fire and writing letters letting him know I expect him to govern differently from * and not be * lite.
