US Names New Iraqi Officer to Lead Falluja Force
Reuter

Mon May 3, 2004

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The United States appointed a former senior officer of the Iraqi armed forces to take overall command of an Iraqi force in the town of Falluja, a senior U.S. military official said on Monday.

The official said Mohammed Latif would lead the Falluja Brigade, subject to checks on his background.

A first battalion of the brigade is currently operating under the command of General Jassim Mohammed Saleh.

<snip>

That sparked anger, however, among Iraqis who suffered under Saddam Hussein's regime and accused Saleh of being a former general in the feared Republican Guard responsible for putting down a Shi'ite Muslim uprising in 1991.

Well, that was quick.

On Friday you're a hero.

By Monday, oops we made another bad decision. See ya. Maybe dressing up in that old Republican Guard uniform wasn't such a good idea after all.

1. The more I read the less I know. Do you recall this?
Kids jump out of the car as stop signs and run around the car then hop in. Called a Chinese fire drill. I think we are all in one now.

2. Aother stupid blunder.
This war is lost. When the marines retreated from Fullujah, the Iraqi forces understood that the US can be beaten. The pictures will draw thousands of volunteers. There are not enough forces now to secure this. More fighters are on the way. The US cupboard is empty.

27 of the Armies 33 battalions are committed or regrouping. If we really have a threat we cannot respond. Aint Offense a big loser?

5. What if we really have a threat?

I've been worried about the same thing myself. If I were an enemy of the US, I would be considering ways to take advantage of our weakened position.

So instead of making American safer from the terrorists, Bu$h has managed to make us even more vulnerable than we already were. Way to go Dim Son.

BTW: Welcome, to DU. :hi:

12. The Democrats ought to be hammering the message that
"It's the security, stupid!"

Bush has made the US more vulnerable than it's been in generations. That all it has left as a trump is its strategic nuclear arsenal is not a reassuring thought.

3. Why is the USA doing the "appointing" in the first place?
.
.
.

Shouldn't that at least be the decision of the Iraqis?

Anyone appointed by the US is not likely to be trusted in my opinion.

Actually, I'll go one step further.

Anyone appointed by the US SHOULDN'T be trusted.

Just My Canuk Opinion

4. names a new leader subject to background checks.....
More like names a new person, so Myers and the Pentagon don't look like idiots for not knowing what is going on. Yesterday was proof positive there is a severe disconnect between Washington and forces on the ground.

9. What were alternatives? Level the city? Urban combat casualties?
We either had to flatten the city, killing hundreds, thousands of innocent Iraqi's and stirring up an even bigger hornet's nest nationwide -- or engage in urban ground combat, sustaining heavy casualties. Bringing in the Iraqi's to take over really does look like the lesser evil.

13. So what does this show the rest of the world?
that whenever the US is too afraid of sustaining too many casualties, we cut and run?

We were the ones that went in like the Gestapo after the 4 mercenaries were killed. And we've acted like the Gestapo since day one, when we overthrew Saddam. Maybe if we rained down food and water, instead of bullets and bombs from the beginning, we wouldn't have had to surrender at Falluja?

11. Only one way out in iraq. Bring the troops home NOW!

Then arrest the whole PNAC bunch and send them to the world court to be tried for crimes against humanity.

And if they are ever free from prison in the rest of their life, bring them back and trie them for treason.

America is a country, not an empire.
