Torture commonplace, say inmates' families
For the families standing in the dusty car park of Abu Ghraib prison yesterday, the revelations of torture and abuse came as no surprise. Every morning, relatives of Iraqi detainees inside the US prison, just west of Baghdad, gather in the hope that their loved ones might be released. They rarely are.

The photos of US soldiers abusing and humiliating Iraqi detainees may have provoked outrage across the world. But for Hiyam Abbas they merely confirmed what she already knew - that US guards had tortured her 22-year-old son Hassan.

Breaking down in tears, Mrs Abbas said US guards had refused to let her in. She had so far only managed to see Hassan once - two months ago - following his arrest last November.

"He told me: 'Mum, they are taking our clothes off. We are nude all the time. They are getting dogs to smell our arses. They are also beating us with cables.'

1. The U.S. and Britain are full of sick people
Lead by the sickest of the sick.

The insurgents have the moral high ground. Who could question the motivation of Iraqis fighting to free their people from these hooligans.

6. They are getting dogs to smell our arses.
Maybe one day the Guards of some Islamic jail will reintroduce the prisoners to this particularly American form of torture

9. The world is full of human beings ...

... and those most susceptible to behaving in this atrocious fashion are those in denial of their own propensities and accepting of such propensities in their political 'leadership.'

3. Do you think Bush will drop his 'rape room' talk?
You know, the spiel where he says 'there are no more rape rooms and torture chambers in Iraq'?

I read an article in my local paper this AM where a former POW was talking about his imprisonment. He said he was stripped naked only once for about 3 hours, but he said it was worse than when he had been tortured by Saddam.

4. The CIA/BFEE helped install the Baathists & Saddam in power, told them
who to kill after they took power, sold them WMDs and gave them targeting information for use against Iran and the Kurds, and taught them the latest & greatest torture techniques. Including sexual abuse.

Now that Saddam isn't available to torture Iraqis, the BFEE has to do it themselves. Those soldiers under arrest for their involvement were just puppets -- and fall guys. And the intel/BFEE/contractors who pulled their strings will get away scot free.

8. The "American media"
is nothing but a propaganda tool used by the neocons. They have absolutely no desire to spread the truth; can't have the masses knowing what the higher ups are doing, can we?

This country is becoming a sick joke...we have become cruel, and ignorant. Publishing the truth might make people start to take notice of what goes on more than a few feet from their t.v.s.

10. How can we make the media cover this?
Edited on Mon May-03-04 12:50 PM by icymist
Last night at work, I showed excerpts of the New Yorker article and some of the photo's to the nurses I work with. They were shocked and amazed that this was being done by Americans! I was asked why this wasn't being covered in the media. We need to get this story and these pictures out more.

edit for spelling.

13. Any Dem who'd wish to do so would be looking for a Pug ...
... to team up with in order to forestall the 'partisan' claim. I think the Pugs are hunkered down in their rear echelon foxholes. It's easy for the Pugs to claim "full confidence in the administration" at this point. The question is whether further developments can show such "confidence" to be the facaed it is.

14. WHEN Kerry wins, I'm going to start a campaign to jail these monsters.
Every single one of the PNACers and their loyalists must be charged with crimes in order for the USA to regain any reputation as a just society capable of being a beacon in this world.
