Hundreds freed from US-run jail in Iraq
http://iafrica.com/news/worldnews/320047.htm

Clutching photographs and waving tatty scraps of paper with prison numbers scribbled down, relatives on Tuesday spent another depressing day between the razor wire and the US-run jail at Abu Ghraib hoping to see loved ones.

Once a feared centre of Saddam Hussein's regime where thousands of political prisoners were tortured and killed, the sprawling jail has become a new hated symbol of the US- led occupation in Iraq.

<snip>

Rather the hell of Saddam than the heaven of Bush

"So how do they think we are going to treat the Americans now?" asked Haidar Hassan, whose brother Ahmed (25) has been held for nearly four months after being arrested near the scene of a roadside bombing.

"We would rather accept the hell of Saddam and not the heaven of (US President George W.) Bush."

1. That's good news, now perhaps our press corp...
...will have access to these people and we can get to the truth about what was going on in those prisons.

5. Don't expect much from the Brits
they're all chasing round trying to discredit the story about British soldiers abusing Iraqis any way they can. At least the Americans owned up to what was going on - the Brits are still in denial.

12. Too right British press is totally corrupt
Remember folks that ABC's war coverage was more balanced than the BBC.
THe Independent and Guardian are insidious phoney liberal rags also.
See William Bowles running commentary on how their twisted logic, loaded language and dirth of context.

17. I disagree.
ABC more balanced than BBC? Since when?

If it weren't for the Guardian and less so, the Independent, have of these threads on DU wouldn't exist.

3. hundreds released, thousands more still held hostage
Were it not for the macabre subject matter, this self-fulfilling prophecy would be hilarious. If those who were kidnapped and held by the invaders were, indeed, not members of the resistance before being seized, many sure as hell will be after their time in the prison camps of the occupyers.

Ex-detainees say acts of abuse were too immoral to talk about

Former inmates of the US-occupation run Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad still find it difficult to relate their experiences of torture and humiliation, as more pictures of abuse come to light

One of the released detainees who was forced to pose naked in a human pyramid has told Aljazeera that the acts committed against them were so horrible that he still could not get himself to speak about most of it.

"They wanted to humiliate us. It was disgusting", said Hashim Muhsin.

"They covered our heads with plastic bags and hit our backs with sharp objects, which added to our wounds".

"They then took off all our clothes, made us stand next to the wall and carried out immoral acts that I cannot even talk about", Muhsin continued.

CIA present

Another released prisoner, Haider Sabbar told Aljazeera that "CIA officials and two Iraqi and Egyptian translators showed us immoral pictures of the acts that took place" before interrogating them.

=====

From Taguba's report, now in CNN's hands:

- Threatening with a 9 mm pistol.

- Pouring cold water on naked detainees.

- Threatening males with rape.

- Beating with a broom handle and a chair.

- Sodomizing a detainee with a chemical light and perhaps a broom stick.

- Threatening with military dogs.

- Attaching wires to extremities, including the penis.

- Accusing prisoners of being homosexual.

- Forcing detainees into compromising positions while naked.

<snip>

"We are Muslims. We don't go naked in front of our families. But there we were, naked in front of American women and men," he said, adding that this treatment went on for about four hours as punishment for beating a fellow prisoner suspected of spying for the Americans.

He also said guards "hit you hard in sensitive places, in the kidney, in the chest, in the throat."

"Our bodies were full of bruises. They didn't let us out of the cells until all our wounds had healed."

7. TOO IMMORAL TO TALK ABOUT ???
When the POW had a PLASTIC FLASHLIGHT RAMMED UP HIS RECTUM ???

When a GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG BIT HIM IN THE TESTICLES ???

When the POW had a 220 Volt wire attached to the TIP OF HIS PENIS ???

When Lynndie England was encouraged to help the POWs obtain erections so they could perform
ORAL SEX ACTS ON EACH OTHER and the PERKY PRINCESS OF ABU GHRAIB
PRISON COULD SHOUT "HE'S GETTING HARD"???

When a POW was beaten to death, HIS BODY PACKED IN ICE and TAKEN OUT IN THE
DESERT AND DUMPED

When a Civilian Interrogator ANALLY RAPED A 16 YEAR OLD BOY IN FRONT OF GI
WITNESSES and is going to get a free pass because he was under NO ONES JURISDICTION ???

This will win the confidence of these people in the "NEXT DEMOCRATIC ELECTION"

8. I agree with you that we MUST talk about it but
it was the ex-detainees saying they couldn't talk about it to anyone when they were released because they were so shocked and ashamed.

What HORRIBLE things to do to people.

Are we not the new NAZIS? Little did we know, 2 years ago, how apt our comparison of Bush to Hitler was.

9. Agreed Tinoire.-- I am not an Islamic man --
I am learning every day about their culture from the examples here of how these men were abused and degraded.

Apparently nudity and anal rape in front of Women and strangers is highly offensive to Islamic males, which is precisely why these low ranking MP's were encouraged to commit WAR CRIMES by the "Civilian Contractors" in charge of finding the missing WMD's, Saddam and the rest of the "DECK OF 55"

Whoever the FUCK they are. (THE "CIVILIAN CONTRACTORS")

10. War Crimes. No ifs, ands, ors, or buts about it!
They're monsters; that's who they are. The people who set this in motion, ordered, directed, and encouraged this are MONSTERS.

May everything they did to these people be done to them.

13. New Nazi's is a little flattering I'm afraid
Edited on Tue May-04-04 10:30 AM by Leezamarie
There is no evidence that Nazis orchestrated public group sexual assaults and acts of torture, filmed them and sent pics to their buddies. Be fair to the Reich!

19. I'm confused.
I have seen the films of Nazi medical experiments, and the lines of women naked waiting to die. There is no reason to think that Nazis didn't perform sexual assaults and really no reason to think that there is not film of that somewhere.

But regarding the last sentence "sent pics to their buddies" is this how the film got to CBS? I haven't heard anywhere just how this film got into the hands of the media, or even exactly who is responsible for taking the pictures, or whether the camera was military issue, or any details on that. If anyone knows, please post.

20. From what I understand
The soldiers who participated in the events took the snapshots and then shared them with other soldiers. One of the people who received the photographs, and also knew of the torture, contacted military authorities.

CBS apparently only has a small subset of the evidence. According to the New Yorker, the guy who initially contacted the investigators provided a whole CD-ROM with pictures of torture.

18. McCain was just on one of the cable clones calling for
Congressional hearings on the basis that the Pentagon knew about this at least since January and they are supposed to keep Congress informed of everything going on in the war and they kept this covert. He mentioned Rumsfeld as one of the ones that needed to be subpoenaed (sp?) to testify.

Oh, hawhawhaw, the news she-bot on CNN announced the clip by saying "Democrat cong..DemoCRATIC congressman John McCain is calling for hearings..." then onto the clip of McCain huffing about this mess.. then when they came back to the newsbot she said "bad mistake on my part, that should have been REPUBLICAN congressman John McCain."

So apparently we're not the only ones that can't tell the McCain twins apart.
