1. The Olympics are how many months away?
Geez, this will only fuel the fire of those wanting the US to pull out of the Athens games.

4. not a chance
not when we can showboat with Iraqi athletes who will no doubt be the centerpiece.

and not when we can have Mr. Bush hang a gold medal around the Iraqi track and field winner. Ratings boost!

19. It's not Bush's show. It's Athens' show.
Bush isn't going to hang any medals on anyone.

6. I feel bad for the athletes who have trained so hard
Competing in the Olympics is the realization of a dream. I hope the IOC security people can make this happen for each and every country that has athletes wanting to compete.

8. * would not allow a US pullout from the games
Hmmm... on second thought, I could see * taking one of two paths...

- Won't pullout 'cause it would be a sign of weakness. He'll look like a chicken if the US team fades.

- *Will* pullout 'cause he wants to scare the 'mercan public prior to the election. Gotta keep the public afeared of terrists if he's gonna keep them poll nummers up.

9. Exactly
It's already been commented that security is going to be damn hard to prepare, given that the venues may not be finished before the games start.

Maybe we should change the venue to downtown Baghdad, I hear they
will throw a hell of a celebration party.

14. Maybe I wasn't paying attention..

I don't remember hearing about bombs going off every week before Bush. Did this shit always happen and I never noticed, or the US media didn't report it as long as we didn't die from the explosions?

I thought Bush was stomping out the evil-doers..

21. Thanks for the welcome!
Thanks... My wife is Greek and lived on the isle of Rhodes but grew up in Sydney, so this topic finally got me to register. She has lots of friends in Greece and of course any news of this sort makes me nervous.

16. Your memory isn't failing, you were paying attention.
You didn't hear about bombs going off before Bush because there weren't many. I heard (I think one of the 9-11 commission mentioned this, in the questioning of Ms. Rice.) that there have been more terrorist threats and outright attacks in the past thirty months than in the thirty months before the attacks of September 11, 2001. Think it's a coincedence? I don't.

17. I can't wait to see the US at the Athens' Olympics
Of course terrorists will try to scare us, but what is the use of the sports if we are too afraid to even play them.

18. The bombs went off as the city began its 100 Day Olympic countdown
Timing is everything, and I have a sinking feeling that these bombs were a message that the Olympic Games will be disrupted, and that they will not be safe.

Who knows if they'll succeed, whoever it is that is sending this message... but the timing can't be ignored, setting the bombs off as Athens began its 100 Day countdown. An anonymous caller tipped off police to the the three bombs, which also seems to point to the fact that this was a message, and that they didn't intend to hurt anyone... this time.

... related to international terrorism.

Just reported on CNN International.

WOW! That was one speedy investigation! Exactly how many hours did it take for them to determine the source of the bombs? Pretty amazing.

Haven't we heard this before, last March, to be exact, and are there any Greek elections coming up? :eyes:
