The alleged abuse of Iraqi prisoners by US and British soldiers has shocked Indian Army officers, who say such behaviour goes against all conventions governing the actions of armed forces engaged in hostilities.
Referring to the Indian Army's humane treatment of over 90,000 Pakistani soldiers taken prisoner during the 1971 war, officers described as "shocking and despicable" the alleged abuse by US and British soldiers in Iraq.
"It is despicable. Even when we had taken so many prisoners during the 1971 war, we treated them decently and humanely. Our men vacated their beds to accommodate the prisoners and the Indian Army purchased Qurans for them out of its own resources," said a senior officer who spoke to IANS on condition of anonymity.
British papers and American TV channels last week exposed the alleged rights abuses by the military personnel in Iraq.

Since then, at least two Indians from Kerala have complained that they were made to slave away in American military camps in Iraq after being cheated by travel agents who had promised them jobs in neighbouring Kuwait.
