Marine Who Served in Iraq Dies in S.C.

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP)

A U.S. Marine who was part of the unit that helped rescue Army Pfc. Jessica Lynch died in a car crash on his first weekend home since returning from Iraq.

Josh Speer was killed when his car veered off the road, overturned several times and struck trees Sunday morning. The 21-year-old soldier was heading to see his fiancee.

Capt. Shawn Turner, a Marine Corps spokesman, said Speer served with the Marine unit that aided in Lynch's rescue. Turner said details of what Speer's unit did to help Lynch, the Army private captured by Iraqis, were unavailable.

Speer was wearing his seat belt, state Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Dan Marsceau said. ---

3. Why are details of the mission still secret?
Turner said details of what Speer's unit did to help Lynch, the Army private captured by Iraqis, were unavailable

I cannot understand why details of what Speer's outfit did is still being kept hush-hush.

14. You will probably have quite a wait
That woman is still in isolation, with amnesia, no less.

How conveeeenient.

And when she comes out, IF she comes out, she'll still have "amnesia".

18. According to her parents: No amnesia....
Probably why she's still in seclusion.

It's beginning to look like there may need to be a 2nd Lynch rescue. This one from U.S. Henchmen.

6. Because the whole operation was a major FUBAR
Friendly Fire May Have Killed Lejeune Marines

Nine N.C.-based Marines killed Sunday in the battle for Nasiriyah may have been victims of friendly fire, not Iraqis pretending to surrender as originally believed.

<snip>

Officials at the U.S. Central Command in Qatar would say only that friendly fire is an unfortunate reality of war and that they're still looking into the deaths of the nine Marines based at Camp Lejeune in Eastern North Carolina.

On Sunday, Army Lt. Gen. John Abizaid said the Marines were killed during heavy fighting inside the city after a small group of Iraqi solders indicated they wanted to give themselves up. They then fired a rocket-propelled grenade at the Marines' amphibious assault vehicle, according to what witnesses told journalists with the unit.

But a military source told The Washington Post that early indications suggest the nine may have been hit by an A-10 Thunderbolt II plane providing air support, whose pilot mistook them for Iraqi fighters.

7. Sorry, guys, this was most likely an accident
of a young horny marine going too fast on the way to seeing his fiancee.

It's a real damn shame.

8. It is a shame...
but, man, what an odd coincidence.

I'm trying hard not to slap on my :tinfoilhat: on this one.

Whatever the reasons behind this death, though, it is sad as hell.

9. From what his fiancee said, they were Xtian fundamentalists
and if they are, then like the fundamentalist I know they would believe that speeding is a sin. No, I don't think this guy was speeding or drinking.

16. speeding
Plenty of fundamentalists in the South speed on the roads. They usually don't drink, though.

I'm wondering if the guy had been up all night, even if not drinking.

11. Something doesn't smell right to me.
The whole Lynch rescue has the potential to soil a lot of people and if this guy was going to talk, I would think that a single car accident would be a remedy to the bastards.

It's sad and tragic no matter what the cause was.

19. What ever came of the investigation
into the death of Katherine Smith? She could have been part of an organized crime operation, and that's why she was killed.

15. Why was he home in the states?
For some reason, I'd been under the impression that most of the ground forces were still in Iraq.

Did (some of) the Marines come home?

17. Some of them are indeed home.
One of my brother's best friends has just returned from Kuwait. (Thank God he was nowhere near the real action.)
