Marine Who Served in Iraq Dies in S.C.

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP)

A U.S. Marine who was part of the unit that helped rescue Army Pfc. Jessica Lynch died in a car crash on his first weekend home since returning from Iraq.

Josh Speer was killed when his car veered off the road, overturned several times and struck trees Sunday morning. The 21-year-old soldier was heading to see his fiancee.

Capt. Shawn Turner, a Marine Corps spokesman, said Speer served with the Marine unit that aided in Lynch's rescue. Turner said details of what Speer's unit did to help Lynch, the Army private captured by Iraqis, were unavailable.

Speer was wearing his seat belt, state Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Dan Marsceau said. ---

Friendly Fire May Have Killed Lejeune Marines

Nine N.C.-based Marines killed Sunday in the battle for Nasiriyah may have been victims of friendly fire, not Iraqis pretending to surrender as originally believed.

They then fired a rocket-propelled grenade at the Marines' amphibious assault vehicle, according to what witnesses told journalists with the unit.

But a military source told The Washington Post that early indications suggest the nine may have been hit by an A-10 Thunderbolt II plane providing air support, whose pilot mistook them for Iraqi fighters.

Plenty of fundamentalists in the South speed on the roads. They usually don't drink, though.

The whole Lynch rescue has the potential to soil a lot of people and if this guy was going to talk, I would think that a single car accident would be a remedy to the bastards.

It's sad and tragic no matter what the cause was.
