Canadian peace activists to welcome US Iraq deserters
VANCOUVER, Canada (AFP) - Peace activists have rebuilt an "underground railroad" into Canada, where thousands of Americans dodged the Vietnam war draft, to help US soldiers flee duty in Iraq (news - web sites).

Activists responded to a steady flow of US casualties in Iraq, a growing number of reservists heading to war zones and dark warnings that Congress might bring back the draft.

While the number of fugitives fleeing from US duty to Canada has only been a trickle, at least two US deserters have been taken in by Quaker families in Ontario.

Several other US soldiers are thought to be in Canada, after going AWOL from their units.

1. I am not a Quaker, but of all the religions, I admire them the most
they have been relentless in their protesting this illegal war. They also think.

I will be proud to afford anyone fleeing this stupid, asshole and ignorant administration, a stopover in my humble, four room house, which is about five hour drive from the Canada border. I will give you breakfast or a place to lay your head--although you wioll need a sleeping bag or a tent.

I am certain there will be Quakers in my town who would do the same.

5. I agree. It's an authentic faith. Quakers have a history of helping in
the days of slavery via the underground railroad also.

3. As a Canadian, I am glad to hear this
Any deal our government might have made with BFEE about deserters or draft evaders would quickly lose public support if many cases like this occur. Especially now that the torture stuff is out.

4. website of deserter Jeremy Hinzman
http://www.jeremyhinzman.net/

Heard him address the crowd a few weeks ago at the Toronto anti-war march. Very smart, clued-in and well-spoken.

From his FAQ:

2. What is the basis of your rejection of this war?

I object to the Iraqi war because it is an act of aggression with no defensive basis. It has been supported by pretences that cannot withstand even elementary scrutiny. First, before the U.S. dropped the first bomb, it was quite evident that Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction. Second, the Bush administration had the gall to exploit the American public's fear of terrorists by making the absurd assertion that a secular Baathist government was working with a fundamentalist terrorist group. There was never any intelligence to substantiate this. Third, the notion that the U.S. wants to export democracy to Iraq is laughable. Democracy is by the people, not an appointed puppet theater.

If the Iraqi people were to choose their own government, it is inevitable (by demographics alone) that the government would be Shia. A Shiite government would probably be quite un-open and even possibly hostile to the U.S. and its aims. It just so happens that Iraq is also the home of the second largest known reserve of oil in the world. America is notorious for its insatiable thirst for cheap oil.

Perhaps I made a mistake by enlisting in the Army, but the U.S. is putting the lives of its soldiers in jeopardy in order to the line the pockets of big money. I will not get blood on my hands or put my life in danger for such an endeavor.
