Muqtada al-Sadr's Baghdad office bombed

Monday 10 May 2004, 11:25 Makka Time, 8:25 GMT

Al-Sadr's Mahdi army will withdraw from Najaf

US aircraft have bombed the office of Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.

Witnesses said a US aircraft dropped at least one bomb on the one-storey office around 2:00am on Monday (22:00 GMT on Sunday) and virtually destroyed it.

There was no immediate comment from the US military, which reported 19 members of al-Sadr's Mahdi Army were killed in a series of clashes in the impoverished Shia neighbourhood on Sunday.

US forces had raided al-Sadr City office in the early hours of Sunday and arrested two people, one of them said to be a Mahdi Army financier, US military spokesmen said.

The raid was part of a stepped up military campaign against an uprising launched by al-Sadr against US-led occupation forces a month ago....cont'd

1. That'll calm everything down
not.

Nobody in charge seems to be thinking very clearly. Not that they ever were but they seem to have lost it totally.

6. no mention of bombs in NYT article ???
BAGHDAD, Monday, May 10 — American forces destroyed the Baghdad headquarters of a rebel Shiite cleric on Monday, a day after troops killed at least 19 of his militiamen in clashes in the Sadr City slum district, the military and witnesses said Monday.

Witnesses said American armored vehicles had pummeled the walls of the compound, the offices of the cleric Moktada al-Sadr, which also contained a small mosque, around 2 a.m., toppling large portions of the brick and cement building.

Witnesses said the building had been evacuated, and that there had been no casualties.

After a tense day on Sunday, security checkpoints in the neighborhood were being guarded again, and businesses were open, residents said.

8. U.S. aircraft said to have destroyed militia office in Baghdad neighborhoo

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) A U.S. aircraft destroyed a Baghdad office of radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, his followers said Monday. There was no comment from the U.S. command.

The office, located in the Shiite neighborhood of Sadr City, lay in rubble Monday. Residents took to the streets with white plastic buckets and wheelbarrows to remove the rubble. It was one of two main al-Sadr offices in the Baghdad area.

Several Iraqi children displayed gray and white pieces of what appeared to be from a Hellfire missile.

The U.S. command in Baghdad said it had no report on an air attack.

However, a statement by the command said U.S. troops clashed Sunday with ''numerous anti-Iraqi forces'' in Sadr City, killing 19 of them in separate engagements.

''All 19 insurgent casualties carried rocket-propelled grenade launchers,'' the statement said.
