US first lady saddened by Iraq prisoner abuse scandal
WASHINGTON (AFP) - US First Lady Laura Bush says she was deeply saddened by the scandal over US troops' abuse of Iraq prisoners.

Saying the abuses made her "sad, really sad," the first lady told ABC television: "To be perfectly frank I can't bear to look at the ones that have been in the newspaper.

"It is really, really sad, I mean, it is sad. I think we -- we agonize as each of those pictures come out and as we see them. It is a picture we don't want the rest of the world to have of us," she said, adding that she was concerned about US troops safety noting the scandal "makes our troops more vulnerable."

She said President George W. Bush had been "very anguished" by the affair which has done serious damage to the US image abroad, and especially in the Arab world.

12. she's taking lessons from Babs
"Why should we hear about body bags and deaths," Barbara Bush said on ABC's "Good Morning America" on March 18, 2003. "Oh, I mean, it's not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?"

47. Her Beautiful <sic> Mind
Published on Thursday, April 29, 2004 by CommonDreams.org

Excerpts:

What could be behind the Bush Administration's decision to censor the photographs of flag-draped coffins returning from Iraq? Could it really be, as the government says, to respect "the privacy of the families?" Or is it to hide the realities of war for political reasons? Or is it to protect the delicate sensitivities of the ruling class as Americans die to build them an empire?

As the argument over this censorship continues, I hope people remember a widely-quoted remark made by the president's mother, Barbara Bush, last year during the build-up of the war - the lying time.

"Why should we hear about body bags and deaths," Barbara Bush said on ABC's "Good Morning America" on March 18, 2003. "Oh, I mean, it's not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?"

55. and it's gotten worse now she's old enough to act the part!
When she was younger, even Richard Nixon was a bit intimidated by her (he allegedly remarked that she was someone who "knew how to hate").

But the sweet grandmother with the cute doggies proves to be a perfect guise, these days. Oh, how could anyone suspect her of anything?

In a way I feel sorry for * -- she managed to get him to be the family enforcer in order to please her, punishing his siblings when they stepped out of line, and she could just stay above it all and never be seen losing her cool and spanking them.

40. here are a couple links
http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/e1698.htm

According to the two-page accident report, Laura Welch was driving her Chevrolet sedan on a clear night shortly after 8 p.m. on Nov. 6, 1963, when she drove into an intersection and struck a Corvair sedan driven by 17-year- old Michael Douglas.

Although previous news accounts have reported Douglas was thrown from the car and broke his neck, those details were not in the report.

The speed of Laura Bush's car was illegible on the report. The speed limit for the road was 55.

http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/people/shows/bush/profile.html

Her late adolescent years were marred by a tragedy that was not highly publicized until her husband's presidential run. When she was 17, Laura accidentally drove through a stop sign and hit a car driven by a high school friend. He was killed. No charges were filed in the accident.

I might be wrong about this, but I have heard that the boy that was killed was either her boyfriend or finance.

edit to ask: why does this ninny always wait until everyone has said their piece about something and then comes out and repeats something that someone else already said?? Not one original thought in that stepford brain. It's like someone wrote down what she should say, and then weeks later after she has it all memorized, she comes out with a comment. Did the same thing re: the treatment of women under the Taliban. Repubs think this makes her 'classy'. 'Cause she sits at home with her hands folded in her lap and a frozen otherworldly half-grin on her face.

11. Give her some truth
I won't deny that she may actually feel bad about the pictures she has seen. The torture pictures from Iraq are despiceable, but they are pale in comparison to the suffering this war has caused to the many thousand civilians or soldiers, that were killed and maimed by the unlawful occupation.

Does she grieve for them? Do the pictures of exploded little girls haunt her sleep? Has SHE lost her limbs and her family - or are these just pictures she shrugs off as "collateral damage"?

If she really cared, she would have done everything she could to stop her husband from waging wars.

No, Laura, it isn't just sad it is disgraceful, sickening, mind boggling in its horrific display of man's inhumanity to man, crappy, fully inhuman, foolishly sophomoric, damaging, contrary to our internal descriptions of American morality, terrible, horrible, dreadful, awful, horrendous, appalling, shocking, ghastly, and irreversibly damaging to the image of the United States of America.

In short, it is Hitlerian.

Note to GOP...don't trot out the First Lady to discuss this event again.

in a u.s. prison and then decide if the stuff in the pictures is any more cruel or unusual.

Whats worse? being in one of those photo's? or being an Iraqi non-combatant rounded up, held without charges for 6 months while your family fends without you in a war zone? That prison must have at least 1,000 blameless people that Princess Laura won't worry about unless they get 'excessively' abused on film.

33. Exactly what I thought
She's not as bad as W, though. She's just so used to being a priviledged elite that she really can't conceive of a view which looks at others as her equal. Thus, killing them isn't so bad, torturing them isn't so bad, but when pretty people of her stature are made to look bad, that's an atrocity.

W, on the other hand, is actively mean.
