Soldier: Foul photos of inmates were prized
http://www.tallahassee.com/mld/democrat/news/nation/8629607.htm

"ANTIOCH, Calif. - Long before the world saw shocking photos of U.S. soldiers abusing Iraqi detainees, Sgt. Michael Sindar and other military police serving at the Abu Ghraib prison saw all they wanted of them.

Pictures of abuse and humiliation of Iraqis, taken with digital cameras, were burned onto CDs that circulated widely among prison personnel, said Sindar, 25. Peeks could be had in the chow hall.

"It was like a commodity," Sindar explained. "Whatever pictures you had, whoever had the most foul picture out there, everyone wanted to see what it was."

Brutality was also in the air. Sindar recalled a 14-year-old Iraqi with a broken arm being hurled to the ground and then mocked by U.S. soldiers as the boy wept and wet himself in the prison intake center."

2. names names names
we need names - who was that soldier? The only way to circumvent these cover ups is to make sure we know who these people are in every possible public forum. These guys are coming home: Coming soon to a neighborhood near you . . . and quite frankly I don't want my family or children to be anywhere near them.

I wonder how that soldier would feel if an Iraqi had done that to his 14 year old son. It's infuriating that our so-called American military should even remotely think that it is somehow excusable. We are the evil empire, and it is not acceptable.

27. I HAVE SAID THIS TOO ----be CAREFUL
There are a lot of Troop Apologists at DU who will give you hell for being unpatriotic or a Troop Hater, I suspect that some of them are freepers looking for a flame war. They are getting more subtle in their approach and they sound almost sincere-- but inevitably they out themselves.

As to the BAD ACTING---IMHO its more than the 6 bad apples the military says-- but I think the top end is at least 200 with several thousand accomplices, who have either condoned it or participated in one form or another. A lot of them are "CIVILIANS"

Welcome to Du----saigon :-) :-)

4. Support Our Troops!
We don't need to name anyone. These are brave and patriotic humanitarians. Anyone who would question the US military is an obvious traitor (as well as morally degenerate, and should be put someplace safe like Guitmo).

Jesus H. Christ

Maybe now we can dispense with the nationalism? Even here at DU it often seems a sin to criticize the US military. I'm sorry, but from where I stand, they are just as bad now (or worse) as they were back in Vietnam. There is nothing to support; unless you support unbridled violence against a civilian population. We are creating our own monsters who will then be unleashed on an unwitting America when they get home. We'll be lucky if most of them just go quietly crazy, but I suspect a lot will go postal.

Violence begets violence.

I noticed soldiers in other photos wearing them as well. What dirty job required them to wear those?

12. How could you miss them?? Pentagon training to make animals
out of human beings aka soldiers. Part of the Pentagon methods of training soldiers to think of the Iraqis, their fellow human beings, as being subhuman. Same with the hoods. If they have hoods on MPs don't have to face them, don't have to look in their eyes--they no longer see them as human beings. The US has been doing this sh*t for decades--like Israel, they have it down to a science. :puke:

19. I'll take the chance of getting flamed but I'm not going to
go to the depths the wingnuts go to when they paint all of us as traitors.

These idiots and their superiors deserve the same treatment they gave the Iraqis, but not all the troops deserve to be heaped with scorn by us. Bet most of them don't want to be there any more than we want them to be there.

We have a lot of Nam and Gulf I vets here, did they come back as psychos.

Let's not paint all the troops with such a broad brush.

24. Not All Troops Are Bad
Of course not. In fact the vast majority are decent folks. And that's just the other side. People are people, most good, some cruel. Give them all guns, few rules and what've you got? Iraq.

The broad brush is intended to get at policy, not to disparage 135,000 people. Rumsfeld is lying when he says that these abuses don't represent US Government policy. They do; we are now an empire that tortures it's enemies. How broad of a brush do you think we should use to paint that picture?

6. You are a prisoner when you see these photos
This is what's in store for you. This is what we're
capable of doing.

The pics began as time saving methods for
softening up the inmates.

And 90% of the inmates (ICRC) are innocent.
So what happens when these pics are shown
to you, the prisoner, and you have no info
to give.

8. The impact of the word "CONTRABAND"
One of the spectre's of fear that was visited upon us Viet Nam Vets way back when was the idea that the mere possession of pornography, photos of human atrocities, and other such materials would expose the person possessing them to punishment, including imprisonment.

Military (current or former) folk now in possession of these materials will be extremely hesitant to go public with them if subjected to this kind of scare tactic. (Many would merely destroy them.)

11. *SOLDIERS* "masturbating 12 times a day"
When I saw this article in my local newspaper yesterday, I had to read this paragraph about three times to get it clear. At first I assumed it was referring to the prisoners "masturbating 12 times per day." It was THE SOLDIERS. The first link is from this thread, and is a MUCH edited (down) version, particularly bowlderizing the "masturbating 12 times a day" line.

Strong, who treated both soldiers and Iraqi inmates for injuries, said he would watch soldiers for violent tendencies or signs of combat stress.

"You can see these guys messed up ... running up and down the halls naked, or when they're not eating, losing weight," Strong said. "There were probably 30 people that went on medication while they were over there - Prozac, Zoloft, those kind of drugs."

20. Wow. As bullied and isolated as I have felt stateside,
I can imagine how liberal leaning soldiers have felt. And they were getting none of the news we were getting, about no WMD's, and no link between iraq and 9/11, etc. I certainly don't know whether the torturers were in the minority, but I bet the liberal leaning soldiers were. God bless 'em, trying to exist and keep their humanity in an atmosphere like that, knowing that those at the top of the heap like Rummy et al are hardcore racists and just don't care.

Twisted. Truly twisted. Next thing we'll hear about is the CDs being given away in cereal boxes.

Can someone remind me, just who was supposed to be "shocked and awed"? Us or the Iraqis? We have a little blowback situation here . . .

23. G*DDAMN BU$H and CO!
It would seem that there is no leadership, those troops placed between a rock and a hard place cracked. I don't excuse those who committed brutality but where in the HELL were the OFFICIERS!
Masturbating 12 times a day, they are fucking scared and taking the only relief possible. To be put in such a situation by Bu$h and CO is ... words fail me.
