Kerry Warns Opponents Not to Attack His Wife
LOUISVILLE, KY. (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry warned his political opponents on Monday against attacking his outspoken wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, saying, "They're going to have to go through me."

The Massachusetts senator also sought to dispel the notion he was aloof, asking one television interviewer: "Have you had a beer with me yet? I like to have fun as much as the next person, and go out and hack around and have a good time."

Worth an estimated $500 million, born in Mozambique and fluent in five languages, Mrs. Kerry can be controversial and blunt, disclosing her Botox injections, her prenuptial agreement with Kerry and the fact he was in the bathroom when he got word of his wins in Iowa and New Hampshire.

"If they want to attack her, they're going to have to go through me. I'll be the first to defend anything she does. ... She doesn't pull her punches," Kerry said in one television interview when asked if Republicans were targeting his wife.

1. I think Teresa should debate with Laura Bush
Can you imagine that? I love Teresa Heinz Kerry - she's "the real deal".

I think the Republicans fear her because she was one of them until recently.

34. Teresa Kerry is the real deal. I'm happy JK stepped out to blunt the attac
Mrs. Kerry is NOT a politician.

She is a philanthropist..

After the election, I know she will, once again open the WH, to the public. Hey, she's in our crowd now...

attacking Cheney...the Repubs need to be very careful what they say about her (if anything)... but she can't be in the fray but above it at the same time

7. Well, they trot out Laura Bush,
so she's part of the campaign as well. I don't think that the Republicans want to open up a lot of scrutiny about Laura's past.

On the other hand, the Republicans seem to be under the impression that all of American adores Laura, so they may well make a misstep in this area as well.

5. Damn straight!
Teresa can take it but the GOP shouldn't make her an issue.

I do get images of Ed Muskie in Manchester, though.

Don't make too much of a big deal about this, JK. You've said it now move on.

13. She's much better at it than Hillary.
She's older and richer and not afraid of any thing. I saw her give Judy Woodruff a run for her money the other day.

Hillary was so green when she first came in that she sounded a little elitist at times (I'm not Tammy Wynette comments)

10. Maybe that was how she got "jumped in" to the Bush gang
You can't be in it unless you've killed somebody, done a bunch of drugs, been arrested, or used prostitutes. Maybe Laura thought death by vehicle was the least icky of the choices

A First Lady should have the right to do more than gaze admiringly at her husband and walk two steps behind him.

14. John Kerry needs to get used to the fact that...
Edited on Tue May-11-04 10:16 AM by GainesT1958
Presidential politics "Chip" Rove-style is truly the political eqivalent of "total war": anything, everything and EVERYONE is fair game in this type of scortched-earth battle. Even one's children, sad to say (recall when OxyRush called Chelsea Clinton the "White House Dog"? How about when John McCain was "rumored" to have fathered a "black kid out of wedlock"? ) Kerry should--and apparently does--expect his wife, his kids, and even his step-kids to be attacked by the Bushco Blitzkreig.

They won't stop attacking Teresa Heinz-Kerry; they'll just kick it up several notches. We have to be ready to respond.

Personally, I think even Barbara Bush is fair game in this year's campaign; after all, she did dismiss the deaths and life-changing wounds of our troops with the wave of her royal hand last year. Damned if THAT isn't an issue!:grr:

B-)

is going to look like a vapid, stepford bimbo.

and the more john kerry stands up and says "don't be saying untoward things about my wife or somebody's ass WILL get whipped," the more he looks like a regular guy who cares about and will take up for his family.

19. I approve of Kerry speaking out against attacks on her.
He has to lay down the rules whether they follow them or not.

Gore or someone speaking for him should have laid down the rules about shirts and his lies and his neck.

Both Kerry and his wife have to draw the line. If he draws the line and they cross it - he only has to draw attention to the line and not come off as defensive each time they attack and they will - they will get their battallions to do it, just as they did on their war against Clinton and Gore. At least if he draws the line, the big guns may observe it.

Rove and Hughes observe nothing because they have no decency.

We need to know as much as possible about her to disspell the lies the second they start. We learned too late that the accusations of lies about Gore. There was too much time for the accusations to become entrenched.

23. Repubs Never Learn Do They?
The attacks on Hilary Clinton during the 92 campaign really backfired as many working women saw them as attacks on themselves and their choices in life.

If I recall correctly, Bill Clinton's poll numbers actually went up when he defended Mrs. Clinton.

Well now we've had 8-10 years of this BS and believe me the women in my age group are still pretty pissed about what happened to Mrs. Clinton. And we vote!!!!!

28. You may want to rethink your condiment decision
Heinz, as a brand, isn't supportive of the liberal cause... and it's bosses actually support the bushies.

Additionally, THK owns less than 4% of Heinz stock.
