Food Stamp Use Skyrockets in Arizona
http://www.kpho.com/Global/story.asp?S=1854375

(Phoenix-AP) -- Food stamp use is going through the roof in Arizona.

The latest figures show 203-thousand Arizona households receiving food stamps. A report by an anti-hunger advocacy group says Arizona's program has jumped 108 percent in the past four years.

Nationwide, the increase was 37 percent.

Officials say the increase in Arizona reflects the state's rapid population growth coupled with a dismal economy and a sluggish job market.

3. But, but, but, we're told Arizona's economy is BOOMING!
I can't tell you how many of my friends -- educated, experienced, qualified for all kinds of things -- are looking for work without any success at all. Et moi aussi.

Arizona's economy is booming in construction and services. Construction is mostly non-union; services pay shit.

oh, and I think gas is around $2.25 a gallon. I don't know for sure, since I can no longer afford to drive, and there is NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION where I live.

I really love Arizona, and I have no desire to return to Indiana, but it really is one effed-up place in some respects.

5. Plus, all of our high tech and IT jobs are being
outsourced to India.

One of my best friends was laid off a week ago from her job at IBM.

Yeah, construction of McMansions is booming, I'm sure she can get a job doing that.

6. Is AZ subsidizing Walmart? Probably
It seems no one here can say "no" to the big box.

I've frequently told how the city council of Goodyear, AZ, overrode the recommendations of the planning committee -- and hundreds of citizens' outrage -- to approve the construction of a new Supercenter 3 miles from another.

McMansion? Gawdess help us! Several thousand being built just north of my house. Desert stripped to bare caliche, tile roof after tile roof as far as the eye can see, cement block walls now blocking (pun intended) any view of anything -- and the subdivision is called "Desert View." I oughta take the camera out and show you.

Tansy Gold, feeling more and more and more like Howard Beale every second
