Bali Bomber Sentenced to Death

"One of the chief suspects accused of carrying out last year's Bali bombing has been found guilty and sentenced to death.

Amrozi bin Nurhasyim was accused of conspiring, planning and carrying out an act of terrorism, which killed more than 200 people...

Police say Amrozi, one of three brothers arrested in connection with the Bali operation, had admitted buying the explosives and the minivan used in last October's blast.

But the 41-year-old mechanic has denied that the attack was the work of the regional militant Muslim group, Jemaah Islamiah (JI), which has been linked to Osama Bin Laden's al-Qaeda network."

I am normally completely against the death penalty, but I am struggling with myself not to be delighted that this foul, evil man is leaving the planet. The main thing holding back my glee is the thought of any repurcussions from this and the fact that sentencing him to life in an Indonesian jail may have been more unpleasant for him. The devastation that this bomb caused, both on Western tourists and locals, including Muslims, cannot be underestimated.

My brother is currently in Indonesia and I am now praying for him to get back to the UK safely ASAP....

One of the first major convictions of a terrorist bomber and he's given the death penalty and nobody has an opinion?

I find it odd, although it's not a criticism.

Maybe it didn't hit the US media, and I did post this in the middle of the night (US time)...

I've found it strange, too, that there has been a lack of DU discussion about the sentencing of the "smiling bomber." I think it's quite telling that the US media tends to ignore stories that don't directly involve Americans, even though we are all involved in the global war on terrorism together.

In fact, I believe the Bali bombings claimed Australians as its highest casualties; we should show our Australian friends and allies a little bit more respect. The least we could do is give this important story the kind of coverage it deserves.

I must say I was absolutely appalled at Amrozi bin Nurhasyim's behavior during the trial, and felt particularly sad for the families of the victims who were forced to endure his displays.

I am so puzzled that there is little apparent interest in the sentencing of an Islamic terrorist who played a major role in killing 7 innocent US citizens in a bombing atrocity which also claimed the lives of over 200 others, including many citizens of America's strongest allies.

I watched a documentary on Bali victims last night, and it still makes me cry. Maybe I'm a bit too close to it at the moment, but I am stunned that the US media isn't giving this more coverage.

I'm not criticing DUers, but I'm confused as to why this gets less interest than e.g. Kobe......

Why give him what he wants?

It was wrong of him to kill.

It will be wrong of "Us" to kill him.

Because that's what he wants it makes it right?

I didn't say we should give him what he wants, and I haven't expressed a position on whether 'we' should kill him.

This guy actually smiled and laughed when the sentenced was delivered. This guy deserves this sentence he got.
