Edited on Thu Aug-07-03 09:36 AM by khephra
http://moveon.org/

I hope this counts as breaking news.

I'm starting this a bit early as I wanted to give everyone a bit of a head start on getting their online setups going, just in case there's a lot of people trying to get online to watch.

50. If only your Supreme Court hadn't messed up America!!!
What a pleasure to listen to someone with BRAINS who is actually able to pronounce words of more than one syllable! And to hear him tell it LIKE IT IS!....When he said America should be "feared only by her enemies" that rang a bell with me..a Canadian...We and many other countries in the world, who have always been your allies are now living in dread of what your president may visit upon us....I can't but believe your country will VOTE OUT the moron who is now in the White House along with his whole gang!!!

15. Looks like it will be a critique of Bush

Feldman said Gore in today's speech would use Iraq as a "departure point" for a wide-ranging critique of the Bush administration and its policies. The official announcement said the issues Gore will address include Iraq, the economy and the environment

92. this is the most telling part of the speech:
..."To the contrary, the US pulled significant intelligence resources out of Pakistan and Afghanistan in order to get ready for the rushed invasion of Iraq and that disrupted the search for Osama at a critical time. And the indifference we showed to the rest of the world's opinion in the process undermined the global cooperation we need to win the war against terrorism."

now follow me on this one. gore is clearly implicitly supporting the invasion of afghanistan, the overthrow of the taliban and the pursuit of al qaeda and osama. while on one hand he says over and over again how we have been misled (at least) on virtually every question since bush took the white house, on the other hand, he seems to have no questions whatsoever on the official version of 9/11. bush lied on everything except 9/11. bush must have told us the out and out truth on that one. that's the story gore wants you to buy. huh?!?! does that strike anyone else as a unimaginably glaring oversight or internal inconsistency?

111. Clinton and Gore wanted to go after Osama
The reason Gore supported going into Afghanastan was because he and Clinton recognized that Osama bin Laden was a threat. Even if you believe that he had nothing to do with 9/11, he has already been implicated in the previous bombing of the WTC and the embassies in Africa. There was a reason that Osama was No. 1 on the most wanted list. When Bush took over, he was given a plan to attack Afghanastan in order to pursue Osama. Bush ignored it. Gore is not at all inconsistent on this issue.

31. laying it out: 'totalistic ideology' means totalitarian to me!
Edited on Thu Aug-07-03 10:34 AM by vidali
"Robust debate in a democracy will almost always involve occasional rhetorical excesses and leaps of faith, and we're all used to that. I've even been guilty of it myself on occasion. But there is a big difference between that and a systematic effort to manipulate facts in service to a totalistic ideology that is felt to be more important than the mandates of basic honesty.

Unfortunately, I think it is no longer possible to avoid the conclusion that what the country is dealing with in the Bush Presidency is the latter. That is really the nub of the problem -- the common source for most of the false impressions that have been frustrating the normal and healthy workings of our democracy."

Gore just said to huge applause

58. Right on the money
He is definitely the kind of person one would classify as "Presidential" indeed. I always felt the media's portrayal of him as being stiff and whatnot was inaccurate, he's a quality speaker, ke obviously knows the issues, and he garnered the most votes in Presidential election history. I think if he ran again he would pull of an Electoral College victory. People do realize what a mistake they made in voting for Dubya over VP Gore.

Now onto problem 2---distortion of the truth....EPA stripped of global warming info.......substitue info paid for by American Petroleum Institute....Treasury now being told to change ramifications of tax law..
'Mishandling and selective use" Iraq = the distortion of best available evidence on climate change and tax policy....

POlicies chosen well in advance of the facts, using policy to help supporters.....

PROPAGANDA MACHINE to embed in public mind.....myth that GOVERNMENT IS VERY BAD except the part that redirects money to big outfits that have won their way into the inner circle!! And the wealthy should be left alone...

46. I am crying right now...
...I didn't watch, but rather read the speech. We did this country a grave disservice by not elevating this man to his rightful place. Two things:

Al says that he will endorse one of the candidates later in the election cycle. This implies he will do so before the nomination. It is my opinion that whomsoever Al Gore endorses should be the nominee, and likely will be the nominee.

He is so incredibly spot on. He ties it all together, and delivers it well.

I'm just choked up. Al Gore is, today, just one of us, an incredibly intelligent, well-read man with great ideas, intimately familiar with the issues and challenges that face us. The fact that he says all this so brilliantly, without being a candidate, is great. He opened doors last year when he spoke out, and here he is opening them again. He's encouraging us to continue to challenge Bush, and taking it a step further. He's saying, "It's not just the advisors, it's the whole structure of the ideaologues who hold the reigns of power in the GOP. All of them must go."

Whew!

his country really needs him, and his country really needs him, that

109. Where would America be today
1. Gore would have been aware of Al Qaeda. Although a Gore admin. might not have prevented it they would have taken the threats a lot more seriously than GW. (More than likely a Gore administration would have warned the American public, then they would have been ridiculed in the reight-wing press.)

2. Gore recognizes that dependence on foreign oil and other energy resources complicates foreign policy. More than likely the government would have stepped up efforts for alternative fuel sources after Sept. 11.

3. Not in Iraq as a military force. A Gore administration would have read the entire report including the non-existent footnotes and more importantly the appendix of any report concerning Iraqi-terrorist involvement. More than likely any involvement in Iraq would be with the cooperation of the UN. (Hmmm, working WITH the UN, what a concept.)

4. We would wouldn't be freaking out so much about an overzealous Attorney General.

5. Taking steps towards implementing recommendations of the Hart-Rudman report.

6. Treating foreign governments and their leaders as sovereign nations rather than bullying them with the same type of republican tactics they use to railroad America.

7. In negotiations with North Korea.

8. A real economic team whose focus would be helping the American people rather than business interests.

9. cooperation with the families of Sept. 11. in determining what really happened and who was responsible.

10. NO WHITE HOUSE OTHER THAN THE REAL WHITE HOUSE.

Those are just the ones that pop off the top of my head. I'm sure there are dozens, nay hundreds, of other ways that America would be different.

54. This speech should ring like a warning bell across America! It should be
printed in every newspaper and tacked to every telephone poll! (unfortunately it's long and takes an intelligent person to understand it......) but I hope this get's played and every DU'er has a chance to read or hear it. It should go down in history as a magnificent moment for those of us who have been waiting to hear our "President" speak.

Endorsing Lieberman would make Gore look like nothing he's said in the past two years were true. That's yet another nail in the coffin of Lieberman's campaign coffin. Can you imagine how the press will run with it when Gore endorses someone other than Lieberman?

Really fast work, right?

(snip) Gore Assails Bush Policies in U.S., Iraq

Thursday August 7, 2003 5:29 PM

By RICHARD PYLE

Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP) - Former Vice President Al Gore, assailing U.S. policies in Iraq and at home, on Thursday argued that the Bush administration ``routinely shows disrespect'' for the ``honest and open debate'' that produces the truth.

``I think it's partly because they feel they already know the truth, and aren't very curious to learn about any facts that might contradict it,'' Gore said in a speech at New York University.

The 2000 Democratic presidential nominee, addressing about 600 people in a speech sponsored by the liberal activist group Moveon.Org, said the nation's military and economic policies under President Bush had upset many Americans.

``The direction in which our nation is being led is deeply troubling to me, not only in Iraq but also at home, on economic policy, social policy and environmental policy,'' Gore said. (snip/...)

72. Re: Tax cuts
"(1) The tax cuts would unleash a lot of new investment that would create lots of new jobs.

(2) We wouldn't have to worry about a return to big budget deficits -- because all the new growth in the economy caused by the tax cuts would lead to a lot of new revenue.

(3) Most of the benefits would go to average middle-income families, not to the wealthy, as some partisans claimed.

Unfortunately, here too, every single one of these impressions turned out to be wrong. Instead of creating jobs, for example, we are losing millions of jobs -- net losses for three years in a row. That hasn't happened since the Great Depression. As I've noted before, I was the first one laid off." :D

And they have the NERVE to say he's stiff and humorless...

85. Albert Gore Jr. MUST become our PRESIDENT in 2004.
He MUST run. He can bring the world together. I am in awe of his speech. He hit every single issue squarley on the head, and indicted the most corrupt administration to EVER serve in the White House...or is that "loot" the White House?

I accuse Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Perle/Wolfowitz/Murdoch/Hannity/Limbaugh/Coulter/Rove/Fleischer/and all the rest of BETRAYING AMERICA. How dare they fill their pockets with what little the people have? I am sick of arrogance, dishonesty, and the judgemental attitude of the very few.

Al Gore, if you read Democratic Underground, please realize that I am a Tennesean, I have voted for you in every single election in which you ran since I was old enough to vote (I am now 36). I admire you profoundly, and always have. If you will run, I will take my sorry Appalachian hillbilly ass out into the cold Republican wilderness that surrounds me here in Carter County, Tennessee, and PROUDLY stump for you! PROUDLY.

Save us from ourselves and those who would manipulate honest, caring, hardworking people who want nothing more than to be happy and loved. The majority of Americans are UNLIKE the usurpers of the White House. They need to be awakened to their predicament, and someone who loves them all must be the one to do it.

Thank you, sir.

86. He may do better as a support for the Democrat candidate
You know, while I was listening I was thinking two things:

1) He may do far more good while NOT being a Presidential candidate, because there will be fewer restraints on what he must say, and he won't be having to play to the cameras so much;

2) I don't know how they're going to let him get away with telling the truth like this. I am very afraid for him right now.

‘Draft Gore’ efforts step up across state

By Shir Haberman
shaberman@seacoastonline.com

PORTSMOUTH - The field of potential Democratic nominees could increase by one shortly.

The Draft Gore 2004 Committee officially launched its activities in New Hampshire Thursday, by mailing letters to 147 town party chairmen across the state and announcing a write-in campaign for the former vice president.

"We think he is the best man for the job," said Mac Hathaway, who is heading up organizing the Draft Gore efforts in the state. "He was denied a job (in 2000) and we were denied a vote."
cont'd at http://www.seacoastonline.com/news/08082003/news/43747.htm

A Web site for the Draft Gore effort has been set up. It is http://draftgore.com.

Reinstating the Draft
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A25726-2003Aug6.html

A 10th Democratic presidential candidate? Draft Gore 2004 http://www.electgore04.com/ one of a handful of groups trying to lure former vice president Al Gore back into public life, will announce today a write-in campaign for the thus-far non-candidate in New Hampshire. The effort will largely consist of a publicity campaign intended to rally voters there, the site of the first presidential primary, to support the only person the committee says can defeat President Bush.

"The desire for a rematch is a very powerful motivator," said one of its organizers, Mac Hathaway, referring to the 2000 election. "I think the Democratic Party is tremendously remiss in ignoring that."

The group will send letters to the Granite State Democratic Party, along with its town committees around the state. Later, Hathaway said, the California-based group will probably place newspaper ads there and open a local campaign office.

The group got a bit of moral support yesterday from former New York governor Mario M. Cuomo. According to the Associated Press, Cuomo told an Albany-based radio station that he wouldn't mind seeing Gore run again next year.

"Right now, the Democratic voice is not a single voice. It is not a chorus -- it is a babble," Cuomo said. "I would like to see him get in."

Not going to happen, said Michael Feldman, a spokesman for the former vice president.

"Absolutely not," he said. "He's not going to be running."

96. WOW!!!!
I am going to comment before I read any responses in this thread. Just finished listening to Al Gores speech. Read it twice today on Buzzflash. In my opinion it is the most important political speech in my lifetime. Absolutely amazing. How do I know it was important? The major cable networks quickly switched to Colin Powell, and Rush went apoplectic. To say that Gores speech was anything less than a damning indictment of this administration and its policies would be an understatement. Way to go Al. The supreme court said my vote did not count and put nothing more than a criminal in your house. I should have marched in the streets for you. My apologies.
