U.S. lawmaker questions USDA mad cow efforts

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Agriculture Department's blunder in failing to test a condemned Texas cow for mad cow disease may reflect wider problems in the government's surveillance program, a Democratic lawmaker said Thursday.

The USDA last week acknowledged it erred in failing to test a 12-year-old cow for the brain-wasting disease when the animal arrived at a Texas slaughterhouse exhibiting a possible central nervous system disorder.

A USDA supervisor in Austin, Texas refused to test the animal despite requests from federal animal health inspectors, said California Rep. Henry Waxman.

"This sequence of events is troubling, and it raises the question of whether this is an isolated incident," Waxman said in a letter to Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman.

These criminals in the USDA don't give a shit about us!

I WANT MY GOV'T BACK!

on edit: toned down the language a bit. I've been swearing like a sailor on the board lately. I guess I have anger issues.

5. Recently, a small beef company was willing to test EVERY animal
that came through, and were going to advertise that each slaughtered animal would be free of mad cow. The large beef producers thought that was too much competition, so they had the government STOP this small producer from testing every animal that they slaughtered.

It was a case of the bullies squashing the competition by a smaller producer who would look out for the health of the people, because they knew it would take away the market from the big boys.

I thought I bookmarked the link, but I can't find it right now.

This country has gone crazy....up is down, down is up, good is bad, bad is good....

:argh: Geeeeezzzz!

6. yes, you are right - I've posted a number of reports about this company

this small beef company deals in quality beef with a lot of it going to Japan. but since madcow the Japanese won't buy.

this company would have paid for the testing but the gov. said NO.

which makes me know that madcow is out there in US beef.
