Bush approval rating hits new low, Iraq support falling away: poll
I am happy to say this is *not* a duplicate post. This is the new Newsweek poll, 2 hours old. How does 42% approve/52% disapprove sound?

Bush approval rating hits new low, Iraq support falling away: poll

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Public approval for US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) has hit a new low, as Americans show increasing disapproval over his administration's occupation of Iraq (news - web sites), a poll revealed.

The American president's overall job approval rating has fallen to 42 percent, down from a 49 percent rating recorded in an April 8-9 Newsweek poll.

For the first time since Bush took office in January 2001, a majority of Americans surveyed by Newsweek (52 percent) disapprove of him.

The Republican president's approval rating on Iraq has hit a record low, as well, plummeting to 35 percent from 44 percent in the April poll.

15. Right after 9/11, I had hope....

...hope that reality would snap George from the silliness that had been his life until then. I really wanted him to do good and to use the good will we had around the world.

Once the talk of going into Iraq started, I knew those hopes were in vain.

So I can't say that I didn't want Bush to succeed at one point.

Now, I want his political life, along with all of his neocon cronies stomped into a pulp and left to lay in the mud.

and concentrate of other things other than her botoxed face, her helmeted hair, and her bad oriental eye lifts.

and stop trying to sew her own clothing. She is privvy to millions of dollars. She can afford to try to look better than this. Eeeee gad She is horribly inept at the sewing machine and should really spend some money and time on a designer that is going to tell her the truth How bad can it get?

Laura, you are a middle aged woman, heading in age toward your sixties. You are NOT aging gracefully. You do NOT have the svelt figure of your youth and so stop trying to pretend you do. You are an embarrassment to this country with this dress.

9. Bush approval ratings THIRTY-FIVE PERCENT?!?
Edited on Sat May-15-04 03:48 PM by mouse7
I need some historical context to this. Is this lower than Nixon at the time of his resignation?

(On edit) I found the answer myself...

"....In contrast to the Watergate scandal when President Nixon's approval ratings dipped to an abysmal 24% as impeachment moved forward..."

25. Well, if * keeps clinging to Iraq ...

more of this Iraq discontent should rub off on the more general ratings.

And I think *'s too dogmatic to change his mind about or general strategy in Iraq: he shows no ability to absorb uncomfortable facts, and he's not about to admit he was wrong about anything. My bet: we'll get some happy sounding noises, suggesting a change of direction/method, but there will be no real follow-up; the Iraq story will get worse.

39. Actually, according to Faux News, Bush is still ahead of Kerry,
but they did speak of his overall approval falling and all the "bad" news lately. Then they joyfully moved on to a long winded, head shaking, grinning, discussion of "WHY" Kerry's numbers were not moving up fast enough and that if Kerry cant move forward after the events of the last couple of weeks, then this proves he has no campaign and no identification with the public.

it was disgusting.

42. Talk about whistling past the graveyard
The most recent Faux poll did have Bush leading Kerry by 3, but that was before Bush began dropping into the mid-to-low 40s. Head-to-head matchups now have Kerry tied or leading.

Faux needs to brush up on some campaign history. Challengers, even ones who end up winning, are rarely in front at this point, or even tied. Kerry is in phenomenal shape.

17. What will the Apologists say now?
Remember when, in April, the bloodiest month of this wretched war, citing polls in which Bush had yet to begin his slump, Conserva-types were engaging in mutual masturbation, exclaiming that Americans stick by their war time presidents, come hell, high water, or torture???

That was the longest sentence ever, eh? But you get the gist...

Suck it up, Apologists. Sometimes it just takes a little while for it to sink in with Americans, ya know?

19. The rumble is becoming a roar
The voices of dissent, the voices of clarity, the voices who tried to convince the bush supporters of his incompetence, we've been drowned out for years.

Finally they're listening, and adding their voices, too. Once numbers start to slide like this, they take on a life of their own. Kind of that snowball effect.

26. Regime Change is Vital
But regime change is not enough.

Kerry is lots better, but we need to somehow get him moved more toward peace, away from these huge defense budgets, away from Iraq (he says he would stay), etc. etc. etc.

He has no health care reform, no electronic voting reform, no NAFTA/WTO reform to suit me -- these are major issues, and I'm not seeing enough differentiation.

Sure, we might actually not blow the world up with Kerry as Pres. But, we have big problems, many of them made quite awful by Bush, and we need to not just "stay the course" dammit, but start making real progress.

Bush has been jacking up the defense budget 15% per year (just as PNAC plotted out before he got into office), PLUS the huge add-ons for Afghanistan, Iraq, and god knows what's next.

Unless a president and congress not only reverse that 15% per year, but start ratcheting it downward, we don't have the money to do anything about anything else.

It is the giant elephant in the living room.

Bush Job Approval Dips With Iraq Problems

By WILL LESTER, Associated Press Writer

PHOENIX - President Bush (news - web sites)'s job approval ratings are hitting the lowest levels of his tenure as problems in Iraq (news - web sites) crowd out other issues for voters, public opinion specialists say.

A Newsweek poll released Saturday put Bush's overall job approval at 42 percent, the lowest yet in that poll. Other recent survey have rated Bush in the mid-40s.

"Iraq is sucking the life out of other issue deliberations among the voters in the campaign," said political scientist Douglas Strand of the University of California-Berkeley.

Strand and Merrill Shanks, also a political scientist at the school, have conducted public opinion research on how various issues are affecting the campaign.

The sadistic torture of Iraqi prisoners by their American guards, followed by the revenge beheading of an American hostage, has caused the whole world to cry out in anger and revulsion at such gross inhumanity. The debasing images provoke nausea and tears, and a sense of disbelief. How could such crimes have been committed?...........

.............As a result, the world finds itself in a sort of moral limbo, without norms or standards, in which the most outrageous acts go unpunished. This is the devastating legacy of President George W Bush's administration.

46. Why on earth don't the Democrats attack Bush?
Bush is vulnerable on Iraq, but the Democrats aren't hitting him hard enough.

My California Sen DiFi along with other are siding with the administration against releasing more photos of prison abuse.

They are wrong!

Bush could care less about the Geneva Convention or any other international laws (I recall Bush saying: "international law? I better get my lawyer...")

If a Democratic President had an approval rating that low it would be all over.

If the Democrats lose in Nov. we'll know why.

47. DiFi
is in bed with the neocons. She is sort of a female Lieberman.

The two parties break down over the "global war on everyone" issue. There are Democrats sympathetic to the neocons who are for it and there are (usually) midwestern and northeastern Republicans who are, if not against it, way more skeptical about playing out this end-of-the-world scenario than are the fire-breathing neocons such as Rumsfeld, Cheney et al.

There are southern Republicans who were nominally Democratic only a generation ago who are the driving force behind all of this and it is because the Southern Baptist Convention and other right-wing "evangelical" groups are hoping to bring about Armageddon, even if only subconsciously.
