Jerry Falwell Forms Anti-Gay Marriage Coalition
http://www.365gay.com/NewsContent/080703falwellMarriage.htm

The Rev Jerry Falwell announced Wednesday that he is putting aside everything to devote his time to passage of a constitutional ban on gay marriage.

"I am dedicating my talents, time and energies over the next few years to the passage of an amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which will protect the traditional family from its enemies who wish to legalize same-sex marriage and other diverse "family" forms," Falwell said.

Calling it "his line in the sand' Falwell said he is recruiting one million Americans to sign a Federal Marriage Amendment Petition which would be forwarded to all 535 members of Congress and to President Bush

Falwell has set up a website to solicit support: http://www.onemanonewoman.com

Falwell attempts to get in. What a hateful, disgusting human being. Why are there so many of them in this country? His actions have nothing to do with Christianity.

3. Another line in the sand, Jerry?
You've lost every time you've tangled with the forces of progressivism, and this time will be no different. Keep backing up, you neo-neanderthal, and drawing your lines. Your ample backside should be striking the wall any moment now.

Tinky Winky kicked your ass.

6. This will be a cash cow for him
He will raise a ton of money playing on some people's fears of "evil" homos.

It will be all the usuall bs; they are destroying the family, recruiting children, aiding the terrorists, spreading disease, and keeping bad 80's music playing in dance clubs.

Like his comment on using all his "talents"; like bending over, spreading his ample cheeks, and offering himself to the fratboy who would be king?

25. yeah, where is the "no more dead soldiers campaign"
Anyone remember Anita Bryant? "Homosexuals, God loves you too."

the resolution is h.j.56

Anyone wanting some dish on Falwell should rent "The Eyes of Tammy Faye" which shows him to be a complete conniving scoundrel from a RIGHT WING perspective, accusing Jim Bakker of homosexual advances on unnamed men, something he apparently made up according to Tammy Faye, because he wanted the PTL satellite and empire (he got it). This film is hilarious, was made by gay men in part because the Bakker's and PTL had such an open mind toward gays and AIDs for the time, it even shocked me to see Tammy crying her famous tears (20 years ago) talking about her pain at seeing Christians judge PWAs. She also hosted a talk show with an openly gay man after the fall of PTL (into Falwells hands).

19. Will the Catholic hierarchy join the Falwell/Phelps Coalition or ...
have run its own campaign?

In 1993, " the archdiocese of New York, under Cardinal John O'Connor's leadership, in an unusual demonstration of Catholic-evangelical cooperation, distributed hundreds of thousands of Christian Coalition voters' guides in Catholic parishes just before the school-board elections. Then, in March (of 1994), a group of forty evangelical and Roman Catholic leaders issued a public statement, "Evangelicals and Catholics Together: The Christian Mission in the Third Millennium." <http://saturn.colorado.edu:8080/Christian/EvangAndCath.html> The document was initiated by Father Richard John Neuhaus, a neoconservative writer who had joined the Catholic Church after serving for many years as a Lutheran pastor, and the former White House aide Charles Colson <http://wxweb.msu.edu/~zik/colson.html>, now a widely read evangelical columnist. Pat Robertson was one of the signers.

21. Being America's Foremost GayBasher Has Proven Lucrative for Jerry
Edited on Thu Aug-07-03 05:13 PM by David Zephyr
Ya gotta hand it to Jerri, he beat Patti Robertson to the market with his new and improved and recycled anti-gay crusade.

Still, Pope Paula did beat them all.

It's a good thing that the Christians are not letting ony the Muslims corner the market of homophobia. Gotta keep that money in Christendom.

What a wonderful country we live in where a discredited evangelist can find a new way to keep the bucks coming, and for all of us to collectively let that old lesbian couple down the street now just how much they are hated.

God bless America.

22. Jerry, we drew our line in the sand ages ago
And hypocritical "reverands" like yourself seem to be on the otherside.

We need to take away the non-profit status of these operations. He's freaking running a multi-billion dollar company and living the life of luxury tax free.

I thought Jesus reached out those who were downtrodden. Why isn't Falwell spending time helping those that really needed. We've got millions of children here in America living below the poverty level - why not help them instead.

30. Oh, Great....
Now I've got that Bible Camp/Youth Group ditty stuck in my head!

Two quick points: first, there are Evangelical Christians out there (like me) who aren't hatemongers and who don't think people are "immoral" or "sinners" just because they're gay. I'm glad to see most of the posts here slamming JF personally and noting how un-Christian his position is, instead of painting all Christians with the same brush.

Second: Don't the right-wingers realize what's happening with this fervor about amending the Constitution to prohibit gay marriage? They're admitting that as it stands today, the Constitution supports gay marriage! This is the reverse of the old debate over the Equal Rights Amendment: "We don't need that, because women's rights are already protected under the Constitution." Therefore, it stands to reason that if there wasn't already a Constitutional right to gay marriage, we wouldn't need the amendment.

It probably would've been smarter for the Falwells of the world to wait and see what the Supreme Court does. If it takes the next logical step after Lawrence v. Texas and issues an opinion affirming gay marriage, they'd probably get lots of support (unfortunately). I say, let's get this over with and defeated now!

Have a few hundred or thousand gay men profess their love for Jerry Falwell and demand the right to prove it. There are many ways to make that happen in public. If he has enough of a fear he might end up in a cold sweat and who knows what will happen.

37. I see Jerry has embraced hate as an issue, again.
I think Larry Flint needs to add JF to the prayer chain (if ya know what I'm saying) IMO he is a bigger threat to civil liberties that O' Reilly will ever be!

I can see the loonie rightwing's infomercial now:

Jane - "Bob and I have been happily married for 40 years now."

Bob - "We love each other in the only way God intended it to be, missionary style."

Music gets darker

Jane - "Then last week, Bob noticed some homos moving in next door."

Bob - "I was shocked I tell ya, I only thought they existed in the movies."

Jane - "Well, we wrote Jerry the very next day that the "enemy is at our shores", and wouldn't you know - praise God - he sent over a group of "ministers" to beat them up and burn down their home!"

Bob - "Thanks Jerry, for the Christ like acts you performed on those heathen Nancy boys!"

Jane - "Yes that's right Bob, Jerry just loves to spread the word of God, unless you're a gay, lesbian, minority, or demon-liberal, in which case, you need to die! die! die!"

38. Karl Rove?
I smell Rove's sinister influence here. Why would Falwell choose this time to have a hate-fest aimed at gay marriage?

Howard Dean

The right-wingers are scared shitless of Dean and they are going to try to take him down on this issue of gay civil unions. Rove will effectively blur the distinction between civil unions and marriage. Will it work? Maybe. Americans are very mean and stupid, so anything is possible.
