Hawash gets deal, pleads guilty
http://oregonlive.com/news/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/front_page/10602581697431.xml

A former Intel software engineer admitted Wednesday that he and five other men were prepared to take up arms and die as martyrs if necessary to defend the former Taliban government in Afghanistan.

3.  from what the article
says, a minimum of 7 yrs for him.

I am rather curious about his friends and supporters.
And the wife and kids. I don't think a person can
hide a murderous attitude for very long, so what is
their explanation? I don't buy it.

Also, I'm wondering why his naturalized citizenship
has not, and apparently will not be revoked.

What's with that?? Until further notice, I will
believe that not revoking citizenship is part of
bush's deal with the Arabs.

The question is WHY do Republicans want/need Islam followers
and/or Arabs who want ALL of the world either dead
or converted to continue to reside in this country?
Especially since they took up arms against this country
and its citizens.

It is a good thing I am a highly skeptical loner.

4. You really don't know who people are a lot of the time
You really don't know who people are even if they seem nice. I have friends but honestly I don't know their entire lives or if they have secret agendas.

10.  Hi all and I appreciate your
comments.

They make me think.

I guess my biggest problem is that I do not like
the manner in how *s Ass conducts himself in that he
continues to strip away our rights because we
*were* attacked; war *was* declared on this country
and its peoples.

IMO, the war will never end. At the same time,
something must be done to protect this country. But
I don't know what that is or how far it should go.

At the same time, I cringe every time those
shitheads do or say something.

I have a feeling that this guy is very well off
financially so he has a good lawyer. If there were
a viable explanation for his actions, I don't think
he would have pled out.

I'm glad he's locked up because since he wanted to fight,
then he also wants all of us dead; he just chose to
do his killing over there instead of here.

blech! I really hate this shit.

2. Does going to fight for the Taliban make you a terrorist?
Clearly he broke the law by attempting to fight against his adopted country, but were his motivations terroristic? I'm not so sure.

It seems to me that this thing has been rhetorically pumped up by Asscrack and co. to make it a much bigger deal that it is. To me, the so called "Portland Six" is a group of morally outraged people who made a very feeble, half-assed attempt to "go fight for the Taliban."

6. They would probably have been robbed by bandits
and limped home with their tails between their legs. Believe me, I've seen the coverage of this from day one and the Porland six" look a lot more like Cheech Marin than Che' Gueverra.

Mike Hawash's actions had more to do with his instability following the death of his father, and the horrors that he saw going on in his West bank home of Nablus, on his trips to see the family he left behind.

Hell, that would be enough to cause any of us to get a little whack. I, for one, am more than wiling to cut the guy a lot of slack.

9. Hell.......Hawash IF he was going to fight for the Taliban......
(and that's a big if)......never got into Afghanistan. The govt absolutely admits that.

So......if there was any intention of fighting against the USA, then it was strictly in intention only.

Lord, if the govt could get inside MY mind, I'd be toast.

And, I am wondering...what happened to that California kid...Walker??

8. Pleading guilty does not mean he IS guilty.......
Edited on Thu Aug-07-03 11:39 PM by DagmarK
It means that he struck a deal with the state to avoid a life sentence (maybe even the death penalty) or maybe even just 25 years in prison -- which would put him at close to 70 years of age when he got out.

In return for a guilty plea and absolute assurance that would testify against the other 6 people in the group.

He is guaranteed 7 to 10 years -- AND that won't be the time he serves since they greatly reduced the charges. And he won't be deported when he gets out.

Basically.....he's looking out for his kids. He will actually see them graduate from high school!

It took the US govt almost TWO YEARS to detain him. TWO WHOLE YEARS. The other "terrorists" were not well connected to the established community and none of them were going to testify against each other.

The govt finds a guy who happened to give money to an Arab charity......storms into his house while he is not there with a swat team of sorts and terrorizes his wife and small children. Meanwhile, they are arresting him at Intel. And they ransacked the house taking anything and everything. This was all based on a money contribution to an Arab charity that ASHCROFT claims is a front for funding terror.

He was detained as a "material witness" not an enemy combatant. A few months later.....they claimed he was an enemy combatant. They took him to a prison and kept in solitary confinement with no access to private legal counseling FAR away from his family (and not telling his family what was up) and this was based on being an alleged material witness. Apparently, he wasn't going to TALK. And a few months later, they up the ante on him -- charging him as an enemy combatant.

This plea stinks.....but it was the only smart thing he could do to save his own life (cause the govt ain't interested in doing anything other than locking the suspects up for life). He has some hope of being a father to his children. Talk about a friggin gun up to one's head!

The govt needed a SHOE-IN witness! Someone with standing......and someone who was an Arab. Someone who had some stake in this society. And they found Mike Hawash.

It took TWO YEARS for the govt to find a "bury them all" witness. And that doesn't make Mike Hawash guilty of anything. Maybe he is guilty -- but it ain't because the govt proved a thing. What is certain is that the govt found a guy who has no choice but to play their game.

I would plea it out......you bet I would. What person in his situation wouldn't?

This is a TRAVESTY of justice of major proportions and it doesn't bode well for the rest of us. No sirree.......
