Republicans Clash Over Prison Abuse Probe
By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent

WASHINGTON - Congressional Republicans clashed with each other Tuesday about the wisdom of further hearings into prisoner abuse by U.S. soldiers, with a House chairman accusing the Senate of "disserving our military operation" in Iraq (news - web sites) by summoning additional commanders to testify.

"I think the Senate has become mesmerized by cameras and I think that's sad," said Rep. Duncan Hunter, a Californian who chairs the House Armed Services Committee.

Sen. John Warner, R-Va., who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee (news - web sites), declined direct comment on Hunter's allegation, but several Republicans on his panel rushed to Warner's defense. "I believe he's doing the right thing," said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

Warner also disclosed plans to call a dozen top military and civilian officials to testify before his committee as part of a wide-ranging investigation into "all aspects of detainee operations in Iraq."

3. Duncan Hunter
doesn't realize that this is no longer just a political problem for his own party.

This is a war between the top leadership of our military (including many generals who were purged by Herr Rumsfeld) and the neocons who are attempting to use it to further their own nefarious ends of perpetual war.

6. McCain tosses a sidewinder at Hunter 's protests..
as with the deft hands of a skilled surgeon, McCain does Repubbie speak, and it works:

"At the same time, McCain said that thorough public hearings might be a remedy for falling public support for the war, and Graham said they could help "restore the honor" of members of the military."
