NJ Qunnipiac Poll: McGreevey approval rating up
http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x11292.xml

In a first look at the 2005 field, McGreevey leads possible Republican challengers:

44 -- 34 percent over Diane Allen;
48 -- 36 percent over Brett Schundler;
48 -- 35 percent over Douglas Forrester.

Catholic Issues

New Jersey voters disapprove 68 -- 21 percent of comments by some Catholic clergy that they would deny Holy Communion to McGreevey because of his position on abortion. Catholic voters disapprove 64 -- 27 percent. Only 7 percent of voters say they are less likely to vote for McGreevey because of these comments, while 9 percent are more likely and 82 percent say it won't influence their vote.

By a 74 -- 21 percent margin, 69 -- 25 percent among Catholics, voters say it is wrong for Catholic church leaders to try to pressure politicians on issues such as abortion. Voters say 76 -- 22 percent that a public official's religious beliefs should be a private matter, not a matter for public discussion.

2. don't worry
The Republicans will nominate Brett Schundler and NJ will never elect an anti-choice Governor. McGreevey wins by default in 2005.

I really think the only one who could beat us is Tom Kean Jr, but he's probably still waiting to make a bigger name for himself in the legislature before he takes the chance. He would probably win the general on name recognition alone if he ran now. The primary would be much harder for him than the general because the Schundlerites have seized the controls of the NJ Repub party for the time being.

I don't think there are any other prominent Republicans in NJ who have a chance of capturing the Drumthwacket (or whatever its called).

3. Excellent news.
I hope other polls and events bear this out. I hope that the fundies overplay their hand and cause a backlash. We should remember that "backlash" can work in our favor too! People basically do NOT want bishops and ministers running around, Bible in hand, condemning this voter or politician on the basis of their respect for the law--and we must recall that access to abortion is the LAW.

4. What about Chris Christie?
Christie is a prosecutor who's investigating McGreevey, and is widely touted as a potential Republican nominee.

5. Jim's bad rap is largely due to the Repuke radio station 101.5 and
the star ledger. He has done well as of late by being one of the first Gov's to fund stem cell research, an issue that Nancy Reagan now supports.

6. I love how Democratic NJ has become in the past decade.
This guy isn't popular at all, but he's still leading the Repuke challengers by healthy margins. :-)

7. Yeah
I detest McGreevey and I think most NJ votes do, but they aren't going to put Shundler or Forrester in the governor's mansion. But, Diane Allen is a moderate and she could win. She is pro-choice and anti-death penalty. However, she will have trouble in the GOP primary and has low poll numbers now because she isn't very well known unlike the other two.

8. Hopefully his ideas about taxes (new bracket at 500K) will catch on nation
wide.

It's definitely going to put a huge target on his back which the Republicans will take aim at, but, informed voters really seem to be catching on with the idea of progressive taxation.

9. It's funny that they call it the millionaires tax
I agree with the idea but I think that it is pretty funny that the tax is being sold as a millionaires tax even though it affects people who make less than a million dollars.

10. One would assume...
One would assume that any person who clears $500K a year would probably have a net worth of at least a million bucks.

It's not that far of a stretch.

11. It covers all million-earners, plus people making 500k-999.99999K
Edited on Wed May-19-04 09:16 PM by AP
Also, does it start at a million for married people, or does it start at 500k for married people?
