Hastert questions McCain's GOP credentials
Hastert questions McCain's GOP credentials

In a rare public swipe at a fellow Republican, House Speaker Dennis Hastert on Wednesday questioned the GOP credentials of John McCain, a U.S. senator who has often challenged party orthodoxy.

The exchange started when a reporter asked: "Can I combine a two issues, Iraq and taxes? I heard a speech from John McCain the other day..."

Hastert: "Who?"

Reporter: "John McCain."

Hastert: "Where's he from?"

Reporter: "He's a Republican from Arizona."

Hastert: "A Republican?"

Amid nervous laughter, the reporter continued with his question: "Anyway, his observation was never before when we've been at war have we been worrying about cutting taxes and his question was, 'Where's the sacrifice?' "

That is what they were referring to.

anyone who doesn't realize that must be drinking the cool aid! They absolutely cannot be trusted.See Max Cleland and Jean Carnahan. They thought they could be "bi-partisan" and make a deal.Bushco and the Repugs destroyed them for it. Repeat after me,there is NO such thing as bipartisanship.Look what happened with the IWAR vote. Those who trusted Bush got screwed. Did they really believe that he'd keep his word? They shouldn't have. And McCain lovers ,check his voting record and you won't like him so much.He can't even be loyal to the Repugs!

82. Sorry man... But I do blame their party
They are in control of our government and as far I am concerned, they did nothing but play along with this administration, never sticking their neck out. While alot of Dems have done the same, for whatever reason, the Republicans were in control, and only they had the power to stop this mess from happening.

I hope people who have been Repubs for a long time, realize their Party has been taken over by Neocons. Maybe they will do something for us, I don't know, but I do know they will only change their tune because it is effecting them personally and effecting the wallets of their constituents. I consider most Repub politicians as professional lobbyists chained to big corporations.

There aren't that many real Republicans left in Congress anymore. McCain is one of them--most of the rest have been driven out. Maybe the extremists should form their own party--the Torys, maybe? They act like we're in an empire instead of a democracy.

House speaker lectures Sen. McCain on sacrifice, war

By MARY DALRYMPLE, Associated Press

Last Updated: May 19, 2004, 04:27:23 PM PDT

WASHINGTON (AP) - Growing tensions between House and Senate Republicans over the war in Iraq, abuse of Iraqi prisoners, tax cuts and budget deficits erupted Wednesday with House Speaker Dennis Hastert lecturing former POW and Arizona Sen. John McCain about sacrifice and war.

"Throughout our history, wartime has been a time of sacrifice. ... What have we sacrificed?" McCain said. "As mind-boggling as expanding Medicare has been, nothing tops my confusion for cutting taxes during wartime. I don't remember ever in the history of warfare when we cut taxes."

snip...
Then, more seriously, he said: "If you want to see sacrifice, John McCain ought to visit our young men and women at Walter Reed and Bethesda (two Washington area military hospitals). There's the sacrifice in this country. We're trying to make sure that they have the ability to fight this war, that they have the wherewithal to be able to do it. And at the same time, we have to react to keep this country strong not only militarily but economically. We want to be able to have the flexibility to do it. That's my reply to John McCain."

snip...
"The speaker is correct in that nothing we are called upon to do comes close to matching the heroism of our troops," he said. "All we're called upon to do is not spend our nation into bankruptcy while our soldiers risk their lives. I fondly remember a time when real Republicans stood for fiscal responsibility."

41. John McCain is nobody's bitch.
Whether you agree with his politics or not, he's his own man, therefore he can not be president.

Although he is a very obvious conservative Republican, he doesn't take orders from the establishment and that pisses off fascists like Hastert, Frist, Delay, etc. That's why they backstabbed him in 2000. They like totalitarian control and everyone marching lock step.

44. Hastert Has Chutzpah
But then, during the 2002 election Club for Economic Growth ran these attack ads against Olympia Snowe and Goerge Voinovich for opposing tax cuts.

McCain is right, during WWI & WWII our presidents stood before our nation and asked the people to make sacrifices, not just the soldiers. And they did. They had meatless days and sugarless days. Women wore make up on their legs because the silk and nylon for stockings went into parachutes. Communities had scrap metal drives.

If the Republicans want to attack each other, for heaven's sake, let them! Sure, it's rude and stupid of them, let them be that way! It's an election year! McCain's a big boy and can take care of himself.

If you simply MUST complain, please don't complain privately to Hastert: the longer it takes him to figure out how stupid his behavior is, the better! Instead, write a LTTE of your local paper, expressing shock and dismay about the rise of extremism and the loss of civility in DC.

76. If he doesn't know better than to engage in ...

deliberate misrepresentations and unjustified personal attacks, then I want the criticism public and widespread, not buried in correspondence to his office.

81. I agree with you
I couldn't help myself I called his office and bitched about this before it made the newspapers. But, coincidentally, I said about the same thing you are saying, I said, don't tell the representative to apologize, I want his public esteem to continue its free fall.

49. Poor little Denny.
Reduced to being a hatchet man for the House, trying to smear the one repug who could've actually won the election in '00.

What's a matter Denny? Delay's not giving you any sugar lately?

DeLay was right next to him, chuckling. I saw it on C-Span.

Bug Man was too busy exterminating during Vietnam to serve, unlike Kerry & McCain.

53. McCain has it wrong
Republicans never sacrifice. They leave that to other people. He should know that.

55. Yeah? Well, I question Hastert's 'credentials' as a human being!
The entire Bush dictatorship needs to be removed from power.

60. Hastert is a political cockroach.
He is pack leader of these low-life RW radicals that needs to be voted out.

61. I wish the GOP civil war would escalate
you know, like Specter/Toomey. The reasonable Republicans should kick the bums out or destroy the party while trying.

73. Denny Hasturd..Tom DeLay..Bill Frist ?????????
Let's see Hasturd-highschool coach....appointed as Speaker, Tom DeLay-Gingrich wannabee/roach killer, and Bill Frist-cat killer-in- residence & HMO Emperor. Ya think they were chosen for a reason???

All three of these men have speaking abilities on par with Georgie and have proven their suck-up worth to the administration. All three seem to come out of their holes to attack and then return into the darkness until needed again by this administration....much like Cheney.

Let them spew they are becoming more obvious each time they come out into the light.

74. McCain is probably laughing about it
He's more popular nationwide than Hastert will ever be. He also has more name recognition.

As far as sacrifices for one's country goes, there are very few politicians who can match McCain on that issue, in either party.
