In a rare public swipe at a fellow Republican, House Speaker Dennis Hastert on Wednesday questioned the GOP credentials of John McCain, a U.S. senator who has often challenged party orthodoxy.

The exchange started when a reporter asked: "Can I combine a two issues, Iraq and taxes? I heard a speech from John McCain the other day..."

Hastert: "Who?"

Reporter: "John McCain."

Hastert: "Where's he from?"

Reporter: "He's a Republican from Arizona."

Hastert: "A Republican?"

Amid nervous laughter, the reporter continued with his question: "Anyway, his observation was never before when we've been at war have we been worrying about cutting taxes and his question was, 'Where's the sacrifice?' "

There aren't that many real Republicans left in Congress anymore. McCain is one of them--most of the rest have been driven out. Maybe the extremists should form their own party--the Torys, maybe? They act like we're in an empire instead of a democracy.

"Hastert is a draft dodging chickenhawk and he wants to lecture McCain about sacrifice. What a joke?"

WASHINGTON (AP) - Growing tensions between House and Senate Republicans over the war in Iraq, abuse of Iraqi prisoners, tax cuts and budget deficits erupted Wednesday with House Speaker Dennis Hastert lecturing former POW and Arizona Sen. John McCain about sacrifice and war.

"Throughout our history, wartime has been a time of sacrifice. ... What have we sacrificed?" McCain said. "As mind-boggling as expanding Medicare has been, nothing tops my confusion for cutting taxes during wartime. I don't remember ever in the history of warfare when we cut taxes."

There's the sacrifice in this country. We're trying to make sure that they have the ability to fight this war, that they have the wherewithal to be able to do it. And at the same time, we have to react to keep this country strong not only militarily but economically. We want to be able to have the flexibility to do it. That's my reply to John McCain."

Whether you agree with his politics or not, he's his own man, therefore he can not be president.

Although he is a very obvious conservative Republican, he doesn't take orders from the establishment and that pisses off fascists like Hastert, Frist, Delay, etc. That's why they backstabbed him in 2000. They like totalitarian control and everyone marching lock step.

But then, during the 2002 election Club for Economic Growth ran these attack ads against Olympia Snowe and Goerge Voinovich for opposing tax cuts.

McCain is right, during WWI & WWII our presidents stood before our nation and asked the people to make sacrifices, not just the soldiers. And they did. They had meatless days and sugarless days. Women wore make up on their legs because the silk and nylon for stockings went into parachutes. Communities had scrap metal drives.

All three of these men have speaking abilities on par with Georgie and have proven their suck-up worth to the administration. All three seem to come out of their holes to attack and then return into the darkness until needed again by this administration....much like Cheney.

He's more popular nationwide than Hastert will ever be. He also has more name recognition.

As far as sacrifices for one's country goes, there are very few politicians who can match McCain on that issue, in either party.

Hasterts' boss Tom DeLay was ok with this.
