May 19, 2004— ABCNEWS has obtained two new photos taken at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq showing Spc. Charles Graner and Spc. Sabrina Harman posing over the body of a detainee who was allegedly beaten to death by CIA or civilian interrogators in the prison's showers. The detainee's name was Manadel al-Jamadi.

1....what investigation? We know there were a few bad apples and the situation has been taken care of.

I photographed people mocking bodies that were killed on the battlefield. I never ever saw someone beat a POW TO DEATH and then gloat over the corpse.

I remember hearing about this guy at the time it happened. What is interesting here is that it documents both the torture and murder and the lying afterwards to cover it up. The investigators have been reprimanded since, but no criminal charges have been laid. Given that this person was "Iraqi Major General Abed Hamed Mowhoush, who headed Saddam Hussein's air force", it seems reasonable to surmise that the tactics were aimed at finding the non-existent weapons of mass destruction.

"Mowhoush, considered a "high-priority target," turned himself in for questioning in November, according to documents. After two weeks in custody at an Al Qaim detention facility, northwest of Baghdad, two soldiers with the 66th Military Intelligence Company, slid a sleeping bag over his body, except for his feet, and began questioning him as they rolled him repeatedly from his back to his stomach, the documents show.

Then, one of the soldiers, an interrogator, sat on Mowhoush's chest and placed his hands over the prisoner's mouth, according to the report: "During this interrogation, the (general) became non-responsive, medics were called and he was later pronounced dead." According to the documents, "The preliminary report lists the cause of death as asphyxia due to smothering and chest compressions."

Immediately after Mowhoush's death was reported, U.S. military officials released a statement acknowledging he died during an interview.

"Mowhoush said he didn't feel well and subsequently lost consciousness," read the press statement, which is still posted on a Pentagon website. "The soldier questioning him found no pulse, then conducted CPR and called for medical authorities. According to the on-site surgeon, it appeared Mowhouse died of natural causes.""

The beaten and murdered man was shown a couple of days ago, in a photo taken when he was alive, standing with 3 or 4 of his bright, handsome, happy looking young children. They looked very intelligent and polite. And kind.

He looked like a decent man, himself. What a terrible shame.

I mourn my country. I mourn for those poor people who must have been terrified beyond belief. I wish we would quit liberating the hell out of these people. I cannot wrap my mind around this horror. These atrocities were committed in OUR NAMES, and for this, I shall never EVER be the same.

This is no different than what happens at the Skull and Bones initiation, and we're going to ruin people's lives over it, and we're going to hamper our military effort, and then we are going to really hammer them because they had a good time. You know, these people are being fired at every day. I'm talking about people having a good time, these people, you ever heard of emotional release? You ever heard of need to blow some steam off?

They won't release any other pictures, but they'll release these ones (which are undoubtedly horrendous) that keep the focus on soldiers who have already been "allegedly" accused of abuse. This way, the government can keep public anger focused on the few "bad apples" so that they will take the fall for the abuse. Not showing other photos that would illustrate that others higher up the chain of command must have known about the abusive prisoner treatment deflects the public's attention by focusing their anger on these soldiers.

(I'm not excusing the soldiers, as their behaviour is reprehensible and they should answer for their actions. The higher-ups knew about or ordered the abusive treatment though - and should pay for it!)
