Canadian released from Saudi jail

A B.C. man imprisoned in Saudi Arabia on bombing-related charges has been released and is being flown out of the country, a Canadian government spokeswoman said early Friday morning.

William Sampson, an expatriate working in Saudi Arabia, was arrested after bombings that Riyadh attributed to turf wars between foreign bootleggers, but which others say were actually small-scale terrorist attacks. He admitted his involvement on television, a statement his supporters say was tortured out of him, and was sentenced to be beheaded. He later recanted the confession.

The case has become an embarrassment for both the government in Riyadh, which says it is trying to modernize and make more transparent its legal system, and Ottawa, which is accused of failing to act aggressively enough to protect its national from a nation Mr. Sampson's father described as "a bunch of bloody savages."
