U.S. to Investigate Iraqi Inmate's Death
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=519&ncid=716&e=3&u=/ap/20040520/ap_on_re_us/prisoner_abuse_photos

WASHINGTON - The Justice Department (news - web sites) is investigating the death of an Abu Ghraib prison detainee whose body, packed in ice, is documented in photos that also show two American soldiers posing nearby with thumbs up, a U.S. official said Thursday.

The photos show Army Sgt. Charles A. Graner Jr. and Spc. Sabrina Harman, both of whom have already been charged in the Iraq (news - web sites) prisoner abuse scandal. They were shown first Wednesday by ABC-TV and on Thursday by the Arabic TV station Al-Arabiya.

A U.S. government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, identified the dead detainee as Manadel al-Jamadi. The official confirmed that al-Jamadi's death was among those being investigated for possible criminal violations by Justice Department prosecutors.

The detainee, whose badly bruised corpse was in a body bag packed with ice, died in the prison's showers while being interrogated by the CIA (news - web sites) or other civilian agents, ABC reported Wednesday. At least three such CIA cases have been referred by the agency to the Justice Department for prosecution, the official said.

1. Oh, now I feel better. The Justice Department is on the case.
I just know they will uncover ALL the facts. That John Ascroft won't play the CYA game. <sarcasm off>

2. Justice Probes CIA on 3 Prisoner Deaths
WASHINGTON - The CIA (news - web sites) has sent three cases to the Justice Department (news - web sites) for possible criminal prosecution against agency personnel accused of involvement in the deaths of prisoners in Iraq (news - web sites) and Afghanistan (news - web sites), a Justice official said Wednesday.

The deaths last year have been linked to CIA officers and contractors.

It had been acknowledged previously that one of the cases had gone to the Justice Department for possible prosecution. In confirming the two additional referrals, the department official spoke on the condition of anonymity.

~snip~

The practice was established after intelligence scandals in the 1970s led Justice to insist on strict rules allowing department officials to decide what rises to the level of prosecution.

"I think it could be hundreds, hundreds of referrals to the Justice Department," Baker said of the CIA, adding that it is "extraordinarily rare" for intelligence personnel to be prosecuted.

More anonymous sources giving the appearance that Justice is working on the CIA/Contractors murders , and yet in the end...nothing will be done/

5. U.S. official identifies dead Iraqi prisoner in photo
U.S. officials said Thursday that photos of an Iraqi corpse packed in ice that recently have been made public are of Manadel al-Jamadi, who died after questioning by CIA personnel in Iraq.
He had suffered head wounds during a struggle with Navy SEALs at the time of his arrest, sources said.
Both the Defense Department and the CIA's inspector general are investigating whether there was wrongdoing and if so by whom, U.S. officials said.
The agency's inspector general also is investigating two other cases of prisoner deaths during CIA-related interrogations. One case involves an independent contractor for the CIA who was interrogating a prisoner in Afghanistan when the man died, knowledgeable sources have said.

6. They will determine that it was suicide
Just a hunch. Also, it will turn out that the brave soldiers in the photos (Graner and Sabrina) were about to attempt a heroic act of resuscitation, which unfortunately failed.

There, case closed.

In other news, some fresh photos may be on the way.

"Meanwhile, the Pentagon (news - web sites) has told Senate Armed Services Committee (news - web sites) Chairman John Warner, R-Va., that its criminal investigators in Baghdad were given a new photo diskette "under circumstances that warranted investigation, including forensic computer evaluation." The diskette contains 24 photos showing what appears to be abusive acts committed by U.S. forces.

"Thirteen photographs appear to be images already seen on international television media," said Assistant Defense Secretary Powell A. Moore, in a letter to Warner. "The other 11 images have not been identified in previous investigations. They may not be original or true photographs."

7. We should be investigating the Berg beheading as well.
This killing stinks to high heaven. Nothing about the video appears to be Muslim or Islamic killers.

8. Case closed.
Our Glorious Leader has stated that it was Al Q. Nothing further needs to be investigated. The evil doers will be brought to justice.
