U.S. Warns Iraqi Insurgency Could Grow

snip

WASHINGTON (AP) - For months, U.S. officials have warned that the insurgency in Iraq would grow deadliest as the June 30 political transition drew near. Now, they are warning the violence might get even worse once the handover is completed.

Bush has acknowledged that Iraq could remain dangerous and unstable after the transfer of political power.

"He talked about 'time to take the training wheels off,'" Rep. Deborah Pryce, R-Ohio, said after the meeting. "The Iraqi people have been in training, and now it's time for them to take the bike and go forward."

1. I can't believe he is still calling it a transfer of power.
I think it is pretty clear to everyone that this is ceremonial and nothing is being transfered.

I guess there are still alot of suckers out there.

9. this was a Wolfowitch speech back in April 2003
http://www.crienglish.com/144/2003-4-5/17@8252.htm

2003-4-5

"We don't want it to be an occupation. We also don't want it to be something the coalition imposes on Iraqis," Wolfowitz, a known war hawk in the US government, told the London-based newspaper.

His remarks came as US forces were advancing on the outskirts of Baghdad, the Iraqi capital, and had taken complete control of the Baghdad's "toe-hold," Saddam International Airport, 20 km (12 miles) southwest of the city center.

Wolfowitz said retired Lieutenant-General Jay Garner, earmarked by President George W. Bush to head an interim administration after the war was over, would have a limited mandate.

"We view Jay Garner's role as being, above all, to make sure that the basic services that the Iraqi people depend on for their daily lives are functioning in whatever interim period it takes before the government can take over and do it," he said.

But Wolfowitz declined to put a time frame on the likely duration of US rule once Saddam is toppled.

"I can't tell you the exact timing, but the reservation about leaping in with something right away is precisely that we prefer it to be something that we don't declare, but that, in some way, can be an expression of genuine Iraqi views," he said.

He also insisted Garner's role would be a facilitator rather than a proxy ruler.

"It's much more of a technocratic role than a political role," he said, adding that a lengthy period of US rule would be counterproductive, if not pointless.

"There's a certain analogy to the notion that if you never take the training wheels off a kid's bicycle, he'll never learn to ride without them," he told the newspaper.

if they can't change a system that predates our existance to heck with them.

They are setting up excuses because they know it isn't going to work.

15. Maybe their whole idea was an Iraq that was chaotic ...

and ungovernable into the foreseeable future. Then * has a pretext for keeping troops there and not relinquishing control of the oil revenues. :evilfrown:

18. I concur.
I think they were stupid enough originally to think that they would be greeted with flowers and that after they rounded up the 50,000 tons of WMDs they would move on to Syria and Iran quite easily. But once it became apparent to them that they had no justification for invasion and that the natives were getting restless, the plan was changed to Let Chaos Happen On Purpose.
