Families: Reservists Pressured by Scare Tactics to Re-Enlist
http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGBH7J4HLUD.html

CHICAGO (AP) - Army and National Guard officials are using inaccurate scare tactics, some families say, telling inactive reservists they could face being sent back to Iraq unless they re-enlist in the active reserves or join their local Guard units.

MariAnn Curta told the Chicago Tribune in a story published Sunday that a recruiter called her last weekend, saying her 22-year-old son Bill - who recently completed a nine-month tour of duty in Iraq - could be headed back unless he enlisted in the Illinois National Guard.

"It's devious, it's deceptive, it's dishonest," she said. "I can't believe they'd pull this kind of fast trick on kids who have already served."

Army Reserve spokesman Steven Stromvall told the newspaper there has been a problem with misleading, inaccurate and intimidating retention efforts throughout the country and said the Army Reserve was moving quickly to fix the problem.

1. Request nullification
Edited on Sun May-23-04 01:49 PM by sandnsea
The Army told members of Congress on Thursday that it will revoke the enlistment orders of any veteran who signed up based on mistaken information from recruiters.

"We will revoke the order if the soldier requests," an Army colonel said in a handwritten fax to U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio's office.

DeFazio, a Springfield Democrat, asked that Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld rescind all enlistments made under the mistaken order. In the meantime, veterans need to request to nullify their enlistment.

2. "moving quickly to fix the problem?" that sounds more like "moving quickly
to find another way to deceive these brave kids."

7. I read this as major desperation, it tells me that recruitment is down...
re-enlistment isn't happening and they are desperate to find troops to fill the gap until after the election when they implement a draft.

8. Some recruiter called my son Friday, trying to get him sign up for reserve
My wife found out, got on the phone and talked to him. She got pissed at the guy and told him not to call for him until he is at least eighteen(I was at work, or would have quizzed the guy)

At least if your fool enough to sign up for endangering your life in other countries for multi-national corporations, don't give the okay for payments in half loafs.
