FBI Ignored Spain's Doubt on Fingerprint
SEATTLE — FBI fingerprint experts identified Portland, Ore., lawyer Brandon Mayfield as a suspect in the Madrid train bombings six days after the attacks, and investigated him even though Spanish police raised early doubts about a fingerprint match, according to court documents unsealed this week.

A federal investigator traveled to Madrid in April to try to convince police there that a print found on a bag of detonators was Mayfield's. U.S. officials afterward said they believed the Spanish were "satisfied with the FBI laboratory's identification," the affidavit said.

1. Spanish doubts were in the papers early
Spanish doubts about the fingerprints were published as early as May 8th:

Report: Spanish police question fingerprints

Associated Press

MADRID, Spain - The newspaper El Pais reported Saturday that Spanish investigators have serious doubts about whether the fingerprint found on a plastic bag tied to March 11 explosions on commuter trains is that of Portland-area lawyer Brandon Mayfield.

The report said Spanish forensics experts found only eight points of similarity between the print and the one of Mayfield held in U.S. files because of his status as a former member of the Army.

The FBI said it found 15 such points, El Pais said.

The Interior Ministry declined to comment on the report.

2. this is a little different--doubts before the arrest of Mayfield
Was that mentioned in the El Pais report?

March 11, attacks in madrid.

March 17, copy of the partial fingerprint given to FBI.

Mid April, FBI agent travels to Madrid.

At April 21, meeting, according to Werder's affidavit, FBI and Spanish investigators agree that the FBI were right to point the finger at Mayfield.

May 6, Mayfield taken into custody.

May 8, El Pais reports that Spanish authorities have doubts about the fingerprint match.

I'm tending to agree with Wax. On the face of it, the affidavit is false.

The stuff that outrages me though is observations like Mayfield was observed visiting a mosque-- :wtf: The whole thing is a travesty.

4. Maybe that was the whole point of the accusation?
He's been a lawyer for "terrorist suspects," right? How convenient that they got a good look at whatever was in his house/files. Oops, our bad, we shouldn't have had that peek. Oh, well.
