Saddam chef surrenders
From correspondents in Tikrit, Iraq
08aug03

SADDAM Hussein's onetime chef surrendered to US forces in the ousted president's hometown of Tikrit today, a relative said.

US troops raided the home of Major Qais Rajab in Tikrit overnight and searched the place, but the former chef was not there at the time, Rajab's brother-in-law, Walid al-Tikriti, said.

Rajab returned to his home this morning and decided to turn himself in, Tikriti, himself a former lieutenant in Saddam's elite Republican Guard, said.

US forces have detained scores of people as they scour the area around Tikrit, 175km north of Baghdad, in search of Saddam, who continues to elude them four months after they ended his 24-year rule.

I heard this guy was supplying Saddam with butcher knives. And they're only three hours behind his maid, now.

This is also the same source as the Iraq supplying Al Qaeda with WMD story. It's some kind of Murdoch paper. It has Australian and FOX links all over.

1. Phew!
Good thing, too...they had just finished cooking a pot roast. Of mass destuction, that is.

Well, they hadn't cooked it yet. But we have evidence of a cooking PROGRAM.

3. why the hell are we hunting these people?? Saddam included!
Geez, we went from "Saddam and his sons can step down and live in exile" to this? Now it's a deadly, one-death-a-day manhunt for every paper-pusher that worked in the entire Iraqi government?

:wtf:

What are we REALLY doing over there? Just who are we hunting and WHY??

22. I was never frightened of the Saddamy-man
but I never was a fan of him either. Can I agree with Molly Ivins that I am glad he is gone? I also cheered when Tanzania went after Idi Amin. It is pretty obvious to me that we have to get him and his sons if we are going to prevent his return to power after we leave.
Of course, I was recently "joking" with my dad, that they do not want Saddam taken alive and tried. Because then he would be able to testify - "In 1983 I met with Rumsfeld who supplied me with chemical weapons which I could use against Iran ..."

7. It's been well established.............
(at least here at DU and a few other places that have the sand to tell the truth) that the Bin Ladens are not to be touched. Anything to do with Saudi Arabia in any way is verboten. In order to not seem the complete and utter failure that he certainly is, Dumbya wants Sadaam's head on a pike to show off to the American people. Another trophy for the "great warrior" Bush. It was my understanding that this war was to "eradicate the weapons of mass destruction" that Saddam was literaly moments away from using on the United States. Now it's turned into an assassination squad to "mop up" the sins of Bush's past.

21. have the sand?
Iraq has the sand.
Who uses a phrase like "have the sand"????
RU from my hometown?
The goofiest line in our school song was:
"we know you have sand, the best in all the land"
I don't know why that hasn't been a top 40 hit yet.

12. The buzz in the press is that the capture or killing of Hussein will be a
great victory for Bush. I can't make sense of this. Is the whole damn fourth estate caught up in the hunt for Hussein like it's the latest reality show? It's sick. Not that long ago, assassination was illegal -- now it's a national sport.

The Time magazine article on Dean in fact asserted that things would go bad for Dean if and when Hussein was killed or captured -- like he's on an opposing team invested in hiding Saddam or something? Crazy, crazy, crazy -- I could give you a DSM designation -- I am/was a psychologist -- but no official mental illness captures the national malady quite as well as CRAZY!!!

15. Big mistake for him to turn himself in...
Edited on Sat Aug-09-03 02:18 AM by Quizzical
Other people connected (however loosely) to Saddam who have done the same have been kept needlessly for months, even though the people directly in charge of keeping them have written to BushCo to free them. Maybe it was only one guy, Saddam's science guy, but still...

edit: They'll keep him until he has no choice but to falsely accuse Saddam of possessing actual WMDs, etc., I suspect.

31. Aren't we glad that they're taking care of the important threats.
So, this is what our troops are still over there dying for? I'm so glad that they are leaving no stone unturned. I have confidence in our able (ack, hack!) government that they won't stop until even the gardner is behind bars and tried for the war crimes he committed as well.
