France: No Religion in EU Constitution
France: No Religion in EU Constitution

Wed May 26, 4:35 PM ET

PARIS - The French prime minister said Wednesday there is no need for Christian references in the European Union (news - web sites)'s hotly debated constitution.

"The European project is secular," said Jean-Pierre Raffarin. "Our future is a European society which should include secularism as a founding value."

France and Belgium have strongly opposed including religious references in a draft constitution. But Italy and Poland, backed by Pope John Paul (news - web sites) II, want the charter to acknowledge Christianity's role in Europe.

Raffarin, speaking on France Inter radio, said there was "no reason" to amend the draft, which says the EU draws "inspiration from the cultural, religious and humanist inheritance of Europe."

"The Christian heritage of Europe is clear. It cannot be contested. It is something that is engraved in our history," Raffarin said.

1. This issue needs to be fought - there is no reason to mention Christianity
This line is fine the EU draws "inspiration from the cultural, religious and humanist inheritance of Europe."

Mentioning Christianity specifically and excluding all other world religions in the Constitution will lead to many problems down the road. Now is the time to fight this.

2. But religion was very important in forging a European identity

Where would Europe be without the Celtic religious beliefs? Or those of the ancient Romans?

Indeed, the EU constitution should specifically mention Jupiter and Danu as its inspiration, as the Celts then the Romans were the first to envision a united Europe.

On Edit:

"The pagan heritage of Europe is clear. It cannot be contested."

3. Bullshit headline: France objects to mention of Christianity, not religion
And they are right to do so, since Christianity was not alone in founding European values or culture. What a fucking misleading and lousy article.

4. And Spain is conspicuously silent.
I can understand why they might not openly oppose the French perspective, now that we have an American Inquisition in our history. Still, it would be better if Spain openly supported the side of France.

Still, in modern times, guess who sucks the most? None of the above. It's much closer to home.

7. Spain is only silent in that article
"Spain had previously supported them, but changed its policy when the Socialists won the March general election.

Spain's foreign minister, Miguel Angel Moratinos, said: "Spain is a Catholic country, but in the European constitution our government is rather secular, and in this sense we want to respect the text as it currently stands.""

5. Non believers just don't get it
Edited on Thu May-27-04 12:04 AM by delete_bush
There is only one god and he created Europe and was the inspiration for many glorious reality shows such as the Crusades and the Inquisitions.

What is it with Christians and their need to legitimize their beliefs by codification?

Is their religion so weak that it cannot stand on its own in the marketplace of ideas without the need for the imprimatur of the state?

Right wingers are by default petty little people consumed by fear of all they don’t understand, and this subset of the faithful are among the worst.
