A top Bush administration official Friday said the Cuban government may have orchestrated a recent boat hijacking to drive a wedge between South Florida's Cuban Americans.
''Look at the result, at the impact that has caused this community,'' Otto Reich, U.S. special envoy to the Western hemisphere, said in an interview.
In the wake of last month's hijacking of the Gaviota, a Cuban government-owned boat, Cuban Americans heaped blame on the Bush administration and Cuban-American legislators for returning the would-be immigrants to the island.
''This was a million-dollar operation -- you couldn't buy that kind of discord,'' Reich said.

Meanwhile, the Cuban American National Foundation -- which, in a role that is rare, is the main group criticizing the Bush administration -- didn't buy Reich's story, and said his accusations were made to deflect criticism, spokesman Joe Garcia said.
''Show me the proof,'' Garcia said.

Everything Otto Reich can possibly EVER say must be taken in consideration of the bizarre reputation he has built for himself as a top Reagan/Bush professional LIAR.

He told malicious whoppers about reporters covering Nicaragua during Reagan's terms, going as far as to impugn their sexual proclivities and demeanor by claiming they pursued male and female prostitutes in that country while being assigned to cover the Contras. Yeah, right.

He also accused Minnesota's Governor Ventura of going with his state's contingent to Cuba for the Agricultural and Trade Fair as an actual leap into "sexual adventurism" in Havana. Yeah, right, Reich.

From an article concerning the Venezuelan coup, some Reich info. which applies to his history of lying about Cuba:

(snip) Reich is a right-wing Cuban-American obsessed with overthrowing Fidel Castro's regime and is also a big political supporter of President Bush's brother and Florida Governor Jeb Bush, who needs strong support from Cubans in Florida in his re-election bid this year. Reich, along with fellow Reagan administration cohorts, Elliott Abrams and John Negroponte, were discredited for their covert activities and false assertions when the United States intervened in Central America in the 1980's and '90s, but have been re-instated in prominent positions in the second Bush administration. They abhor Latin-American governments that are elected by the poor and working class people, like the Chavez government in Venezuela and the deposed Sandinista government in Nicaragua. (snip)

(snip) On the night of Reagan's re-election in 1984, Reich's office put out the news that "intelligence sources"revealed that Soviet MIG fighter jets were arriving in Nicaragua and Andrea Mitchell interrupted election night coverage on NBC to give the phony report. This resembles the Joseph Goebbel's fabrication that Polish troops had attacked German soldiers to give the Third Reich an excuse to launch the Nazi blitzkrieg into Poland to begin World War II in 1939. Other Reich prevarications given to media sources included: Nicaragua had been given chemical weapons by the Soviets, according to the Miami Herald; and leaders of the Sandinistas were involved in drug trafficking, according to Newsweek magazine.

In Latin American countries the United States has a history of doing business and siding with wealthy oligarchies of business, professional and military elites who tend to be lighter skinned people of European descent against the poor and working class composed mainly of darker skinned, indigenous people and those of African descent. The second Bush administration appears to be adhering to this tradition with gusto. With Otto Reich churning out the hate and fear, it is a safe bet to predict that President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela will be increasingly presented as the devil incarnate and his government as evil, anti-American terrorists. Mr. Reich will dish out the poisonous propaganda to every news source that covers the Bush administration's Latin American policy. Joseph Goebbels would be proud. (snip/)

Does he think that if he says it about Castro first, it won't sound believable when people learn the truth about Otto Reich's fakeries?

I think it's funny that Otto Reich, who has spent his entire career trying to champion the gusano Batista loons in Miami has seperated himself from them by selling his soul to our rightwing warriors, who have their own agenda.

He took the off-ramp when he tried to cover Bush on this one, didn't he? It's delicious reading CANF doubts him.

How can he make it up to them? He's working them like a cheap carnival barker. They are his FRIENDS. Doesn't he recognize them "no more?" This is too funny.

(Is it possible he used them, knowing their clout with Reagan/Bush to get their overwhelming support for his early career moves?)

Our main task is to expose them for what they are; We (the left) must be organize and implement a "quick response" team to counter their lies and expose them for what they are; opportunists who will use everything at their disposal to get their party line across to the fairly uninformed public.

Considering the lengths to which Reagan/Bush have gone in their disinformation campaigns, molding public opinion to be favorable to any violent excesses they might employ in third world countries.

What people thought they were reading as information was actually bogus, as in utterly false stories planted both here and in foreign papers, and even details like letters to the editor, sent in by fictitious military officials, representing "informed views."

Unsuspecting people have been swallowing this bilge, thinking they were absorbing the "real deal."

It's important to stress to people that they must start their own programs of investigating what they hear, rather than assuming it's true, like passive children.

Make it harder for the Reichs of the world to pull the wool over everyone's eyes.

Finally, you're right when you say people who know it when they see lies should speak up and expose them. It can mean getting attacked by the ones who want to see the right-wing program succeeding, but so what? Just airing the lies will get the attention of people who want to start their own research, anyway.
