29. Do you have MS Paint?
If so, go ahead and copy/paste your image into MS Paint. Save it as a new version, and make sure that you "save as" a .gif or.jpeg file. Alter the new file as you wish in Paint.

Now, I don't think you can store an image on the DU server unless you're an admin. You could upload it to another posting forum, the insert the URL of the image into a DU post. Remember, though, once you post the image wherever else, right-click over it and click "properties." Write down the URL that is listed there, and use that URL in the DU post.

Got that?

Bush Says He Was Cure for Illegible Prescriptions

May 27, 6:58 pm ET

By Caren Bohan
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Reuters) - President Bush, taking on Democrat John Kerry over health issues, pitched a plan on Thursday to expand the use of technology in medicine -- including a cure for doctors' illegible handwriting.

Bush touted a goal of storing most Americans' medical records in electronic form within 10 years, saying that would reduce paperwork costs and cut down on medical errors.

"Docs are still spending a lot of time writing things on paper. And sometimes it's difficult to read their handwriting," Bush told an audience at Vanderbilt University in the election battleground state of Tennessee.

"Sometimes information gets lost. Sometimes people inadvertently prescribe the wrong drug," he added. "So the fundamental question is: how do we use technology, how do we modernize health care? That's what we're talking about."

Yes, not universal health care---that's not what we're talking about--we need to fix signatures.

Don't worry, though--it's not like Bush will provide the funding to give these calligraphy lessons!

23. no joke, just more deception
this is my earlier post--

This popped up on Yahoo about an hour ago. Here's the message I just sent to editor.reuters@reuters.com

Dear Editor:

This 'plan' of Bush's comes directly from John Kerry's website:

http://www.johnkerry.com/issues/healthcare /

A New Approach to Control Spiraling Health Care Costs

Lowering Costs with New Technology

The annual cost of health care in America is $1.4 trillion. About 25 percent, or $350 billion, is spent on non-medical items, principally paperwork such as billing and record-keeping. No other industry is so inefficient. This expensive drain on the system can be cut in half with modern technology. Kerry's program will offer a "technology bonus" as an incentive to health care providers and insurers to update their procedures and switch to electronic records.

They want to say "There's no difference between * and Kerry on most issues, so stick with *." It looks like they're planning to steal Kerry's positions on issues. They're already doing it on Iraq.

During NASA's first years in the space business, they quickly learned that pens don't work in the zero G environment of space. Pens need gravity to operate. So they spent several million dollars to make a pen that works in space. The U.S.S.R. never had to make a pen that works in space. They just used a pencil. :P

Unbelievable that a "manager" is spending one iota of his "valuable" time on an issue so insignificant while we have a jobless recover going on - perhaps a recoveryless recovery. We have no funding for all but the rich children left behind, no energy policy, and then, there is that train wreck of a war he has on. He should be impeached for even mentioning this with so much else of import for his wisdom to be focused on.

58. After close to 30 years filling prescriptions,
My bet it's a money making issue for Bush's* buddies, and it's a tracking issue.

This is not about illegible prescriptions, mistakes or even reducing medical costs. It's about a company somewhere where they and he can make a lot of money off the program they are toting. Going digital in some areas of health care is already being done and in those instances it is helpful and makes a lot of sense, but in this case it helps to complete the loop to track all your medical files, even those you'd prefer to be kept under the radar. That's good news for life insurance companies or potential employers. It's also a way to track physician prescribing habits - that could be good or bad depending on how you look at it. Suppose a big pharma tracks and awards kick-backs for each drug prescribed instead of an equally effective, but cheaper (or competitive) medication.

Sure there are difficult to read prescriptions, that's where you either pick up the phone to clarify with the physician or you tell the patient to have the doctor write a new script. I'd say 99% of the prescriptions I have filled were legible. It probably isn't to the untrained eye, but it is to a pharmacist. Most problems with a prescription, and is not a major problem, is an error made by the physician, where in this case, a digital format might come in handy for them. Some hospitals (mostly teaching hospitals) are even looking into something like this, but it's a low priority. I'd say most physcians would not be receptive, but I could be wrong.

A pharmacist doesn't play 'bet your license', and neither do other health care providers. No matter what system or program that is used, there will always be mistakes. Pharmacists strive for perfection in their field.

I'm reminded of my nephew who wanted to be a firefighter. He had a problem with headaches, but was afraid of going to his doctor because it could be tracked through his insurance carrier. Instead, he went to another doctor and paid cash. Under Bush's* proposal, my nephew's cash prescription could still be tracked under a digital format. So could Rush Limbaugh's prescription shopping, which is illegal in Florida. With a court order, all your information would be right at law enforcement's fingertips.

To come up with 100 million dollars for this is suspect. We have too many problems and concerns in many areas of this country, magine that 100 million being used to really fund healthcare, or the schools or first responders. Just imagine if he really did care about the health of American citizens instead of big business and the Bush* pocketbook. Just imagine.

46. WP article on the subject:
Bush Touts Plan for Electronic Medicine
Campaign Aimed at 'Wired' Voters

(snip)

The topic might seem incongruous on a day when the Democratic candidate, Sen. John F. Kerry (Mass.), gave a major address on national security, and with all the crises besetting the administration. But Bush's "conversation on health care information technology" was part of a coordinated effort between the White House and the Bush-Cheney campaign to appeal to suburban swing voters who are technologically savvy.

Bush's senior adviser, Karl Rove, targeted "wired workers" in the administration's first year as one of the groups among whom the president would try to improve his performance in 2004. The focus on medical technology, which Bush included in his January State of the Union address, is also part of an effort by Bush's aides to expand his plans for health care, which polls as an important issue among independents, beyond Medicare and reach voters in their thirties and forties.

(snip)

Both parties like to talk about technology become it makes voters think about the future, and Kerry's health-care agenda calls for "ensuring all Americans have secure, private electronic medical records by 2008." Kerry spokesman Phil Singer called Bush's Nashville appearance a "hollow, misleading" photo opportunity.

The talk-show-style event at Vanderbilt was paid for by taxpayers, but the political overtones were obvious. Bush spoke in front of a giant backdrop saying "Better Healthcare Better Technology." Seated next to him was Jennifer Queen, mother of a 7-year-old who uses a tracheotomy tube and has benefited from Vanderbilt's electronic records program.

Bush said to Queen, "Tell us about Courtney, your daughter." To heart patient Bob McNeilly, the president said, "Tell us how electronic records affected you."

Meanwhile, Bush* plans to make massive cuts to schools, environmental and veterans programs to help ease the Everest-sized deficit. :grr:

61. it's Bush League
If anything it magnifies the need for human intervention. It reminds me of hydrogen as an alternative fuel source.

69. Most, if not all,
major hospitals are storing medical records electronically right now. My first thought when I first heard of this was that the "doctors' bad handwriting" part of this is just a smokescreen. What this really is is a gift for insurance companies. A centralized database that will make it easier for them to refuse you insurance coverage, and paid for by us, their victims. They won't be touting that side of it. Have you seen the commercials? Instant access to your medical records will be good for your quality of health care. Hmmm, maybe a little truth to that, IF you are able to get insurance!!!

71. It's good to hear some protestors showed up.
At the end of the article:
Bush later spoke at a fundraiser at a private home in Nashville where 500 people were expected to pay $2,000 a head for a reception and $25,000 per couple for dinner.

Near the home was a crowd of about 200 people, mainly Bush critics, with signs denouncing the president over Iraq (news - web sites). "Bush Lied; They Died" and "Bring Our Troops Home Now," read two placards.

There were also Bush supporters who clutched American flags and supportive posters. One sign called on passers-by to "Love Thy President."
(snip/)

Oh, jeez.
