Drugmaker `bribed' 4,000 doctors - GlaxoSmithKline
DRUG SCANDAL: Italian officials claim GlaxoSmithKline gave more than US$275 million in cash, holidays and other incentives to physicians, pharmacists and others

THE GUARDIAN , ROME AND LONDON
Friday, May 28, 2004,Page 7

One the biggest inquiries carried out into marketing practices in the drugs industry ended on Wednesday with Italian police asking for almost 5,000 people to be put on trial, including more than 4,000 doctors and at least 273 employees of the British pharmaceuticals giant, GlaxoSmithKline. Some face up to five years in jail if tried and convicted.

Italy's revenue guard, the Guardia di Finanza, said in a statement that GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and its predecessor firm had spent euros 228 million (US$275.9 million) on "sweeteners" for doctors, pharmacists and others over four years to 2002. The alleged bribes ranged from cameras, computers and holidays to outright cash payments.

The Guardia di Finanza said GlaxoSmithKline "should be held responsible for corporate crime as its managers and other employees acted in the company's interest".

2. That's a great site. It's exactly what I've wanted to do for 3.5 years.
This is what ALL people concerned about the Earth should be doing, looking at this site and sticking to boycotting these immoral corporations!

Thanks a bunch!

5. ?? I thought this was common practice.
It is done all the time. I guess the Italians have enough sense to make it against the law?

Right-wing organizations do the same thing - free vacations and perks for judges.

Standard operating procedure = corruption.

7. It IS done all the time....
My father was a doctor and received many perks and gifts ALL the time from the drug companies. When I recently went to a dermatologist's office, there were many "very attractive ads" pushing medicines. And the doctor couldn't wait to write expensive prescriptions....I didn't fill them.

6. GSK is just plain evil
They are the reason that you can not get prompt and effective treatment for spirochetal tick borne disease, like syphilis, that over 1 million Americans unknowingly harbor and which can in at least 10% lead to total debility in less than 2 years, ending in an early death and in many more partial long term disability.

In order to market their vaccine they bribed the state of NY into prosecuting at least 17 the clinical experts through the OMPC. When NY failed to quickly rein in those physicians they moved their bribe a new US headquarters from NY to MA.

Legislation has been in progress for 2 years and is now close to passage in NY that will rein in the OMPC so they cannot arbitrarily target and ruin innocent doctors.

A huge public PR campaign was launched to mislead the public into thinking that the disease is easily detected and cured.

Their sales reps told doctors that the vaccine "cured" the disease when in fact it actually will make it worse and the vaccine itself causes an incurable autoimmune disease in certain otherwise healthy genetically susceptible individuals. We got them to pull it but not before thousands of people were affected by it. There was never any proof the vaccine actually worked.

Columbia Medical Center is the main reason they did not succeed in totally "controlling" this disease. Yale research was totally compromised starting in about 1993.

I didn't know until recently that the CDC is a military organization and those who work there have military commissions. They have been working really hard during the last 10 years attempting to get all state Public Health Agencies under their thumb. Missouri resisted but most states fell in line.
