Retiring U.S. Sen. Zell Miller (D-Ga.) recently continued his string of outspoken comments by comparing American soldiers’ abuse of Iraqi prisoners to his own experiences as a Marine showering with other men.

“The two times I think I have been most humiliated in my life was standing in that big room, naked as a jaybird with about 50 others when they were checking us out,” Miller told radio host Don Imus on May 17.

“Now that was humiliating. It was humiliating showering with 60 others in a public shower, that can be humiliating. But it didn’t kill us, did it? No one ever died from humiliation.”

Who would have guessed. Miller should keep in mind that his public showering humiliations were voluntary, not imposed upon him by an invading army. He might also keep in mind that his experiences did not include:
- being attacked by dogs.
- being choked, smothered, beaten, wired to electricity (including electrical shocks).
- being raped by a broomstick or chemical light.
- having children and relatives tortured and abused in front of himself.
- being starved.
- being soaked in cold water and kept naked for days.
- being deprived of sleep.
- being hooded, and deprived of sensory input.
- being covered with feces.
- having food tossed in a toilet.
- being subjected to "stress positions".
- having to simulate sex with other men.
- being injected with drugs.
- being told he would die if he fell off a box.
- etc.

I was in high school PE (as another poster mentioned) and had to shower nekked, nekked in a mass physical for the draft, nekked in the Army, nekked taking field showers (you got about one minute, no time for humiliation) etc., and I never felt humiliated. In the army, humiliation was not an issue item. Pissing you off, frustrating you, unfathomable orders - sure; but humiliation - nah. That wwas your choice.
