Weinsteins Buy 'Fahrenheit 9/11' from Disney
Miramax film studio founders Harvey and Bob Weinstein have personally acquired rights to Michael Moore's documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11" from Walt Disney Co., after Disney, which owns Miramax, declined to distribute it, Disney said on Friday.

Miramax had funded the film but Disney said it was too politically charged for the family-friendly company.

After more than a week of talks, the Weinsteins have bought rights to the film, estimated to have cost about $6 million, and will arrange for its theatrical and home video distribution.

43. NO THEY WON'T
That's the thing. Disney was refusing to distribute, so the Weinstien brothers said, "Okay, then sell us the rights and we'll take care of the distribution." The Weinstien's will make a mint, NOT DISNEY.

This arrangement was done with the controversial "Dogma" in 1999. Disney refused to distribute it, so the Weinstien's bought the distribution rights and struck a deal with Lion's Gate to do the film distribution in the US and Columbia Tri-Star for the DVD.

11. this is incredibly fantastic
I am happy we will not be prohibited from watching this film cue to the politics of big corporations ruling over what we can and cannot see.

Moore, in spite of his faults, is a real hero here. He made something that is not only controversial, but that is a money maker. in the US, it is the latter that will rule!! LOL

He deserves every bit of money he makes from his efforts. It takes an enormous amount of bravery to do what he did. Many do not have that same amount of bravery in order to produce a film against the president of the United States and expose him for the fraud and for the fascist that he is.

They've only broken even financially, but now they've got a boycott that could put them behind. And by the way, the very reason why Disney acquired Mirmax is that so they COULD fatten their wallets on less than family-friendly fare!

32. Bye bye, Eisner
I purchased Disney stock right after Roy Disney, Jr. resigned and started up his anti-Eisner website, just so I could vote against Eisner, et. al. in the last stockholder's meeting.

Now I'm going to sit back with glee as the value of my stock plummets while Miramax rakes in the mountains of cash with Moore's "Farenheit 911". And just around the time it hits rock bottom, there's bound to be another shareholder meeting, and THIS time, we're going to kick Eisner and his gang of thugs of the board forever. THEN I'm going to buy 911 shares of Disney stock, in honor of Moore and Miramax, and watch the price/per/share begin soaring again!

A small tribute to Michael Eisner:

:hurts:

17. what a ridiculous arrangement. disney can't look like they are doing
anything anti-bush, so they won't distribute the film, but they can't lose face in selling the film to someone else, so they arrange to take a portion of the proceeds and donate them to charity. which would be particularly poignant if that charity happened to be a fund to help out our servicemen and women who are suffering so horribly as a result of bushco's mad behavior.

When I heard that this movie won the Palme D'Or award in Cannes, I made up my mind to go see it, even if it meant leaving the US to do it.

So - good news! I for one will be there, paying FULL PRICE (not the matinee) and I will buy a big tub of popcorn and watch the movie.

34. isn't moore releasing it thru bit torrent?
according to denounce, but i don't know how reliable that is.

i would if i were him. this would certainly give moore that edge in arguing that he's not in it for the money, especially since he pulled that disney stunt earlier.

41. That site is not reliable at all. The film WILL be released through...
....the Weinstein brothers who now own the rights to distribute the film. Try using a REAL source next time.

And what "Disney stunt" are you talking about? Are you talking about the "stunt" where Disney continued to fund the movie until the last possible second when they told Moore they weren't going to release the film? Are you talking about the fact that Moore went public to denounce Disney's decision as one based on being intimidated by Jeb Bush, governor of Florida?

To be honest, I have absolutely no problem with Moore earning money from his film. He took the risks (personal and financial) to see the project through, why shouldn't he be rewarded for those risks? Doesn't the money give him a greater ability to fund larger projects to educate the public about the NoeCons?

35. Someone stands to make a lot of money on this film
"After more than three weeks of talks, the Weinsteins bought rights to the film for costs to date, estimated at about $6 million, and will arrange for theatrical and home video distribution, both sides said in a statement issued on Friday."

I have to think there will be a large audience, and $6 million will be recouped almost immediately. If I held Disney stock I might be upset that they passed.

Harvey Weinstein is a genius. I read an article about him and his brother years ago, detailing his career start as a booking manager for an upstate NY college, and made out so well he went into the biz. From A Room With a View to the entire Quentin Tarantino slate, he dominates every deal. He is the Donald Trump of indie movie deals, but with a Warren Buffett track record.

His deal with Disney is a takeover-in-waiting. As Eisner slides out, Weinstein slides in. Mark my words, this will happen.

The money he paid to acquire the Moore film will be heralded as the coyest move in distribution history. We may possibly never know if Disney was attracted to this offer because it downplays their role in its release, but Harv is no dummy.

It will do boffo B.O.

Wake the kids, phone the neighbors. This will be the blockbuster of the summer. Bet the house.

44. Weinsteins finalize ‘Fahrenheit 911’ deal - MSGOP
The Associated Press
Updated: 5:53 p.m. ET May 28, 2004

LOS ANGELES - Bob and Harvey Weinstein finalized the deal Friday to buy back Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 9/11” — which Walt Disney Co. blocked their Miramax Films division from releasing — and distribute it themselves.

The brothers formed the Fellowship Adventure Group, described as “a new special-purpose company,” to personally acquire all rights to the film, according to a joint press release from Disney and Miramax.

They also reached a settlement so that Disney does not benefit from the movie it turned its back on. Any profits from the film’s distribution that go to Miramax or Disney will be donated to charity, the statement said.

The Weinsteins repaid their parent company for all costs of the film to date, estimated at around $6 million. They will also be responsible for all costs to finish the film and all marketing costs not paid by any third-party film distributors.

It would be great if supporters make plans to see it opening weekend. It's always good for a film to have good opening box office numbers. It's not going to be Shrek, but it would be great for it to have as many butts in seats as possible. Pencil it in on your calendar!
