Boy starts breathing as he's prepared for funeral
BOISE, Idaho - A hospital worker preparing a 22-month-old for a funeral home noticed the boy was breathing — more than an hour after he had been pronounced dead from drowning.

Logan Pinto apparently wandered away from his baby sitter Thursday and fell into a canal near his home in Rexburg, about 275 miles east of Boise. He was submerged for nearly 30 minutes before police found him a half-mile downstream, said Rexburg police Capt. Randy Lewis.

Though an officer gave him CPR and emergency workers did everything they could to revive him, Lewis said, the boy was pronounced dead when it appeared the effort had failed. After giving the boy’s mother and stepfather — Debra and Joe Gould — some time to say goodbye, Madison Memorial Hospital nurse Mary Zollinger began to prepare Logan’s body for the funeral home.

But when she looked at the boy, she noticed his chest was slightly moving and realized that Logan was alive.

1. I'm happy for the boy and his family...
but sad to realize that America will have to put up with Fox news and the "Idaho Miracle" for the next seven days.

3. I am afraid the little tyke is going to suffer
he might have suffered apoxyia (loss of oxygen) and possible brain damage. I hope for his family's sake he is robust to overcome this ordeal.

6. With any luck,
if the water was cold enough, he might escape brain damage - especially as young as he is.

10. I think you mean hypoxia
If it were anoxia (no oxygen at all), he'd probably be dead. But I get what you mean, and it is a real concern. He could very well be brain damaged.

Fortunately for him, the irrigation runoff in Idaho is pretty damn cold this time of year, so he may well be okay.

7. That's why they embalm people--no one gets buried alive anymore
They may be killed at the mortuary, but the body mortuaries put in coffins is dead.

18. I wonder the same thing!
Have we become a society that buries the living? If so let Dubya be the first to be buried alive.

5. This sounds like a story line from HBO's 'Six Feet Under'.
I hope this kid turns out okay...after all, he was deprived of oxygen.

9. I don't understand this...
I mean, isn't there a point at which an alleged dead body has no chance of returning to life, and should it not be at this point, and this point only, that death is declared?

14. If he was hypothermic
it would reduce the body's oxygen consumption since metabolic activity slows considerably. Let's all hope he is OK. Sounds like they were pretty quick to pronounce the child dead.

F-ing HMOs.

11. SAME thing happened to my father!
Way before he married my mother he was in a car accident. They thought he was dead and were ready to embalm UNTIL they found a shallow breathe. He was in the hospital with a broken back for a year and lost most sight in one eye.

20. A Miracle baby...BUT I'm the second.
Actually I grew up hearing the story. My parents got married when she was 35 and he was 45....first marriages for both. He was quit the playboy..."laid,re-laid and par-laid his entire life until he married the best! He was out with a married woman and was in a head on collision. They both survived. He had a broken back and lost most vision in one eye.......BUT still could make 2 babies.

12. A great-uncle of mine was "drowned" in a shipwreck

and woke up on an embalming table. He was terribly thirsty and grabbed a bottle of embalming fluid to drink -- and survived that, too! His "return to life" gave the guy who was supposed to embalm him quite a shock.

13. I would classify this and some of the other posts as miracles
I don't know what inspires them. Maybe it's just a coincidence or whatever God is out there decides to give that person a break. Regardless, it's good to see something like this happen.

A lot of people rip on religion here, but when not abused, I think it's a good thing. The fundies are really screwed up, as is the Catholic Church at times (sorry, but it's true), but I think there is some kind of God out there. As bad as things can get, we always get through it. And I think a higher power has given us all the facilities to run this world and wants to see if we can do it.

WWII is just astounding to think about, but the good (or at least, better) always wins in the end. We've been smart/lucky enough that we haven't yet had another nuclear catastrophe. That's why I have such high hopes for this country and the world - even given all the potential things that could happen in the next 6 months or so. I just can't think that things will end badly (although the way there may be tough), but I think it's going to be a seriously messed up last half of the year.

15. You don't know that it's a break
Things happen. They may be for good or ill. If you are a W fan and religious, the fact that the dump truck didn't run him over when he was jogging back in 2000 is a miracle. If you are one of us and religious, it is a sign of his pact with Satan.

Does good always win out in the end? History doesn't bear that out. Sure, eventually all tyrants die, as do the rest of us. But forward progress, wider freedom and equality are won by the most narrow of margins and can be lost at any time. Faith that things will work out in the end may keep you going personally, but a realization that things may not work out should keep you working. Nothing is assured. The only reason that it seems to us that things work out in the end is that we are the descendents of those who survived the debacles of the past.

I agree that we have the facilities to run this world, though I don't agree about the higher power bit. But yes, whatever it takes to be human, we've already got that. It's a matter of using what we have instead of expecting miracles to deliver us from our laziness or bad judgment. I mean, sheesh, the most shocking thing I've heard from Bush supporters is that many of the fundies actually think that it doesn't matter how much W screws up, because God will fix any boo-boos caused by a "good Christian." "Then a miracle happens" is a stupid policy expectation.

(But it is nice that the kid survived. I hope all goes well.)

16. So, why do some get "miracles" and others don't?
My brother drowned when he was 3. Why didn't he get a miracle? Honestly asking.
