Rocket Launcher Found on City Street
Rocket Launcher Found on City Street
May 27, 2004 — Police want to know why neighborhood kids have been playing with an anti-tank grenade launcher in the 25-hundred block of North 18th Street in North Philadelphia.

It is the modified grenade launcher, a 1.8 millimeter anti-tank weapon found on a North Philadelphia Street late last night by a child. It's in police hands now but it was apparently a neighborhood play toy and curiosity for several days before the parent of a 12-year-old found it and brought it home.

...

Police say this anti-tank weapon had been rendered inoperable. It was probably purchased at a gun show to be kept as a collectible but they are not amused by its presence on a public street in a densely populated neighborhood.

---

Not much to this TV 'news' story, but I note this is second time a rocket launcher was found in last week or so (Atlanta area last time).

13. hmm - lets see - 1.8 mm equals about .07 inches
.
.
.

so that's about 1/4 the size of a .22 caliber shell!

must fire them little poison darts or sumthing?

I guess they should do some homework on weapons stats, no? (even a measuring tape woulda helped out there)

oh well

There's thousands of REAL rocket launchers in the attics, basements and garages of dedicated Murikkans I'm sure . .

(sigh)

9. If it was inoperable...
What is the big freaking deal? It just looks bad.

When I was a kid, we had an old bazooka (no rounds of course) that we used in our war games... I cannot imagine how anybody was gonna get hurt with that thing unless you used it as a club.

12. Exactly. Hardly news.
If it wasn't inoperable, this would be a story. Otherwise it's just some army surplus display item someone's missing. Inert shells, grenades, even big guns with concrete down the barrel aren't news either.

It's amazing what some people go through to decorate their house when they've never heard of Pier 1. :silly:

14. Wow, the streets of Philly are safer...
now that the police tool an empty tube away from those kids.

Maybe the kids will do something more productive like use drugs instead of playing around like kids. :eyes:

NOT!

It must suck to be Calico Johnnie. I mean, you call a press conference, spin a tale of the Boogeyman, lean over into the cameras and go "BOO!"

And everyone yawns.
