CAMPAIGN 2004

Kerry debuts TV ad in Spanish

John Kerry put up his first ad in Spanish to counter television spots by President Bush that have aired for months.

Intensifying the air wars and the high-profile battle for Hispanic voters, Democrat John Kerry on Friday began running a Spanish-language TV ad in six battleground states, including Florida.

The Bush campaign has been on the air since March with Spanish-language ads, and Kerry campaign officials said Friday that the new TV spot -- part of a larger $18 million monthlong ad buy -- is the first in a series aimed at ``talking to Latinos.''

The nation's Hispanics are emerging as the must-have votes of the presidential election: Strategists estimate that nearly seven million Hispanics will vote in November, giving them the potential to swing the election in several up-for-grab states, including Florida, Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada.

SWING STATES

The Kerry Spanish-language ads will run in Miami, Orlando and Tampa, along with Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado and Ohio -- swing states that are increasingly finding themselves saturated with campaign advertising six months out from the election.
