Amid new crisis, US troops in Haiti prepare to hand control to UN force
U.S. troops deployed to Haiti for one crisis and prepare to leave in the middle of another.

Some 1,900 troops were sent to Haiti after President Jean-Bertrand Aristide was ousted in February. They are to hand over control to a U.N. force on Tuesday, but most will stay until the end of June, because only a fraction of the U.N. troops have arrived.

In the last few days, the troops have been helping people in submerged villages after floods killed more than 1,400 people in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The U.S. troops control the few available helicopters and have become key to getting aid to areas that have been cut off.

A spokesman for the U.S.-led multinational task force says on the one hand, there is a sense of accomplishment, but on the other, there's so much Haiti needs.

Helping to overthrow an elected government, and providing troops to install puppets, we can do. But expecting us to stay and help after a major natural disaster, that's just unreasonable.
