Martha Stewart Net Plunges, Outlook Cut
Edited on Mon Aug-11-03 09:38 AM by MaineDem
Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc., the retail and media empire, on Monday posted sharply lower quarterly profit, forecast wider-then-expected losses ahead and said it would remain under pressure until the legal problems of its namesake founder had been resolved.

The company reported lower second-quarter publishing and merchandising results, the lifeblood of its operations, as selling, promotion, general and administrative costs increased.

Martha Stewart herself, who stepped down as chairman and chief executive of the company in June amid an insider-trading scandal, is to go on trial in January on charges of obstructing justice.

Let me try this again: http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml;jsessionid=T2Y5MC05CJCVYCRBAEZSFEY?type=businessNews&storyID=3256100

I'm sorry, I can't get the entire link to appear. The story was the lead at http://www.reuters.com/

1. I really cannot stand Martha Stewart
I find her unbelievably phony. But I still think she's getting a raw deal her. Why they are picking on her but not Ken Lay is outrageous.

2. I agree Skittles
she is the 'fall guy' for corporate America. I'm no fan of Martha's either, but she is not nearly as 'guilty' as the Enron and Worldcom executives who caused hundreds of thousands of average people to lose their retirement money. Martha is targeted because she is a successful woman.

3. Didn't the mafia decide to go legitimate
and get into Wall Street? Martha is just a pawn same as Baxter, Wellstone and others. It's just the way things are now days to take the heat and spot light off others. After all junior is cleaning up corporate crime. This will indeed make junior look good.

5. She's Democratic supporter, that's why she's targeted.
She made a special on how to give a presidential dinner. That's when the Monica story broke.

Has anyone noticed that the information about her suits come out regularly and say almost nothing, e.g. Martha will be indicted in a couple of months! A couple of months? Then tell me a couple of months from now!

She is being used in order to scare other Dem supporters and as diversion for other stories.

Hate Martha if you must, she works hard and the worst thing I've ever heard her say is to "make your bed -- every day." Big deal.

7. Surely there are a few powerful Democrats to counter this!
It is truly mind-boggling how many instances of power politics we have been subjected to by Bush and Co. What I want to know is, are the Democrats doing ANYTHING? Why isn't the public outraged that only Martha is being treated this way?
