BUSH GOES SOFT ON MUGABE
PRESIDENT Bush delivered a bitter blow to millions of Zimbabweans yesterday by failing to call on Robert Mugabe to give up power.

Opposition supporters had expected Mr Bush, who is on a tour of Africa, to take a firm line following a string of condemnations of Mugabe from Washington before his trip. Instead, Mr Bush announced that he was backing the quiet diplomacy favoured by South Africa, which has been criticised for helping Mugabe cling to power.

South African President Thabo Mbeki was accused by opposition leaders of lying to Mr Bush for claiming his "softly, softly" line had led to talks between Zimbabwe's government and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change.
