Kinshasa faces rebel ultimatum

UN troops are patrolling
Bukavu but tensions remain

A rebel officer in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has given the government until Monday to look into alleged atrocities against his group.

Gen Laurent Nkunda told the BBC his troops could not allow new attacks on ethnic Tutsis by the government but did not say what action they would take.

The dissidents are Banyamulenge - as Congo's Tutsis are known.

They briefly seized the town of Bukavu earlier this month, saying members of the group were being targeted.

The recent fighting in eastern DR Congo claimed about 90 lives and jeopardised DR Congo's fragile peace process.

Human rights watch has some recommendations (War Crimes in Bukavu) but are they realistic?
